The festive
crowd on Kentucky Derby Day not only bet big, but it also won big. While wagering $677,141 on the day (up 16.5%
over last year’s Derby), fans at Northfield cashed wagering tickets worth
$780,441, a healthy 15.3% return on their investments.
The most
notable winners were two Northeast Ohioans, one from Lyndhurst and one from
Shaker Heights, who each held a $1.00 Kentucky Derby superfecta ticket that
paid $48,046.40.
Of Ohio’s
eight venues which simulcast the Derby, only one other, Northfield Park’s Cedar
Downs OTB facility in Sandusky, hosted patrons who made a profit. Thanks to multiple successful trifecta wagers
on the Derby race, Cedar fans had a net positive return of $37,022 off total
wagering of $129,628.
William
Henry of Strongsville was also a lucky winner, pocketing $5,000 in Northfield
Park’s Kentucky Derby Race of the Day promotion. Henry selected a sealed
envelope that contained the name of eventual Derby winner I’ll Have Another and
then, along with 19 other entrants who also randomly drew Derby starters, waited
out the finish. All 20 finalists shared in the Run for the Roses fun, with
second, third and fourth place finishers winning $200, $100 and $50,
respectively. All other contestants were
awarded $25 each.
Now It’s On To The Preakness…
This
Saturday, May 19, marks the 137th running of the Preakness Stakes
live from Pimlico Racecourse.
Doors open
extra early at 9:45 am on Preakness Day, and the action gets going soon after
as first post at Pimlico is set for 10:45 am. Early bird wagering on the
Preakness will be available. There will be over 40 other tracks from the U.S.,
Canada and Australia looking for your simulcast wagering dollars.
If you are
arriving early, join us for a special morning snack of two donuts and a coffee
for $1.00 in the Racebook from 9:45 to 11:30 am. Don’t miss out on reserving a
private seating carrel and television for your viewing pleasure. Carrel seats
are currently on sale at the grandstand center program stand on the ground
floor.
Grab a bite
to eat at Northfield Park’s food station near the Trackside Lounge. Specials include pulled pork sandwiches,
Italian sausage sandwiches with peppers and onions, and ham or turkey and Swiss
subs, all served with chips for $4. We also will offer a cabbage and noodles
dish for $2. The food station is open from 11:30 am until 6:30 pm.
Other menu
options will be available at the ground floor main concession stand and The
Grille in the grandstand mezzanine. In
addition, quench your thirst with $3 Labatt and Miller Lite specials and soda and
water specials for $2 located throughout the facility.
Be sure to
try your luck on the FREE Preakness Stakes Handicapping Challenge. All guests
18 and over will receive one entry (from 9:45 am until 5:45 pm) for their shot
at selecting the top four finishers in the Preakness Stakes. The guest who
selects the most correct finishers (based on points) wins $1,000 cash. Prizes
for second, third and fourth place are $300, $200 and $100, respectively.
Northfield
also has a number of prize drawings planned for Preakness Day. The giveaways
will take place all afternoon. Simply fill out the entry blank that you receive
when you enter and deposit it in one of the contest bins located throughout the
track. Names will be drawn randomly throughout the day for cash vouchers,
merchandise, Cleveland sporting tickets, and more.
