OFFICIAL TESTING RESULTS SHOW SUBSTANTIAL RULE COMPLIANCE - CLAIMS OF RAMPANT PAIN MASKING NOT SUBSTANTIATED

The 2018 Anti-Doping and Drug Testing Program conducted by US racing regulatory bodies
found continued substantial compliance with racing’s medication and anti-doping rules and
little support for claims that the use of drugs to mask pain when horses race is rampant.

As it does each year the Association of Racing Commissioners International (ARCI) released a
summary of the collective results of the individual state programs conducted in 2018.

In 2018 horses competing in 95,618 individual races were tested, 43,574 flat races (quarter
horse and thoroughbred combined) and 52,044 standardbred races. This represents a
reduction from the previous year when horses from 98,883 races were tested.

On average 3.2 horses were tested in each flat race and 2.26 horses tested in each
standardbred contest.

In 2018, there were 1,561 violations of the medication rules out of 258,920 samples tested,
meaning that 99.4% of all tests found the horse to be compliant with the rules. It also means
that the facts do not support claims that a substantial number of horses are racing under the
influence of pain masking medications as all testing labs routinely screen for the presence of
such drugs. Such instances do occasionally occur and are reflected in the violations that are
found and prosecuted.

The ARCI has described violations involving Class 1 or Class 2 substances as instances of
“doping”. Violations involving substances of a lesser class often involve overages of
medications deemed therapeutic or authorized by US federal law for veterinary use.

There was a dramatic drop in doping instances from 2017 to 2018. In 2017, 11% of all
violations found were for Class 1 or 2 substances. In 2018, that number dropped to 6.8% of
all violations. In 2018, there were 107 findings out of 258,920 samples tested for these
substances deemed to have the greatest effect on performance, or 0.04% of all samples
tested. In 2017, there were 169 findings out of 293,704 samples, or 0.06% of those tested.

Violations involving Class 3 substances were 26.2% of all adverse analytical findings in 2018, a
slight increase over the 24.5% detected in 2017. There were 409 Class 3 AAF’s in 2018 -
0.16% of all tested - compared to 376 in 2017 - 0.13% tested.

Violations involving substances deemed least likely to affect performance - Class 4 and 5
substances - accounted for 66.9% of the adverse analytical findings in 2018, slightly up from
the 64.5% of AAF’s in 2017.

Clear Rate

In 2018, 99.4% of all samples tested were determined to be clear of any substance that would
trigger an adverse analytical finding (AAF). In 2017, the clear rate for all US horse racing was
99.5%.

For Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse races, the clear rate in 2018 was 99.13% and the rate for
Standardbred races that year was 99.71%.

By comparison, the 2017 Annual Report of the US Anti Doping Agency indicates that their clear
rate for human sport was 99.12% for Olympic, Paralympic and Global Service Testing. The
2019 World Anti-Doping Agency’s Testing Report shows that their “clear rate” is 98.57%.

“Horse racing and human sport share the same challenges in combatting those who cheat.
While the overall clear rate is comparable, I do not believe anyone is under the illusion in either
human sport or horse racing that we are catching everyone who will attempt to cheat,” said Ed
Martin, President of the Association of Racing Commissioners International.

“Industry investments in anti-doping research and a greater emphasis on expanded
investigatory staff at the regulatory agencies and racetracks is essential if we are to effectively
combat this threat,” he said.

GREGG “FAST GREGGY” KEIDEL WINS BILLINGS TROT AT MIAMI VALLEY RACEWAY

by john manzi for the Billings Series

Dayton, Ohio---After a leg of the CKG Billings Amateur Driving Series in the Eastern region yesterday at Freehold Raceway the first this season in the midwest region was presented today (April 28) over the big track at Miami Valley Raceway in Ohio and when the judges hung the official sign Gregg “Fast Greggy” Keidel emerged victorious with Undercover Strike in a 1:57.1 clocking.

Keidel, a veteran over many positions in the sport over the years, added anther victory to his harness driving resume when he scored his 106th triumph today. And by all inferences his triumph this afternoon was rather easy.

Sent off as the 1-2 favorite in the nine -horse field from the two-hole Keidel eased his trotter away softly and was fifth in the :28.2 first quarter as Brian “BJ” Miller showed the way with 75-1 shot, Super Rock. But when Miller tapped the breaks heading to the halfway point Keidel moved Undercover Strike off the pylons and they charged up to leader as the timer flashed :57.2. From there Undercover Strike and Super Rock raced side by side to the three quarters in 1:27.2 where Keidel's charge got first call.

However, at the top or the lane Undercover Strike trotted away to a length lead which was opened to 2-1/2 lengths at the wire. Song In My Heart and driver “Tiny Tim” Miller took home the show dough.
The race winner is owned by Joe Cirasuola and trained by Chris Allen. He paid $3.00 for win but teamed with the longshot Super Rock, the exacta was worth $150.80.

Next up in Billings action will be at Freehold Raceway on Saturday, May 4th,

‘SMOOTH’, ‘PRINCE’ SCORE IN BIG M SERIES FINALS

By Dave Little, Meadowlands Media Relations
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Saturday night at the Meadowlands served as the perfect prelude to the start of next week’s “Championship Meet” as two series finals and two series opening legs were contested on the 13-race program.
In the $54,500 Walner Series final for 3-year-old colts and geldings on the trot, Goes Down Smooth was an opportunistic winner in 1:54 for driver Tim Tetrick and trainer Ron Burke.
Final Claim, also from the Burke barn, was the 2-5 favorite looking to stay perfect in four seasonal starts. He turned for home with the lead but went off stride in mid-stretch, allowing Goes Down Smooth to inherit the top. He hit the wire a neck in front of Warrior One. Cheap Tricks was third.
Goes Down Smooth, a son of Muscle Hill-Peach Martini, returned $8.40 to win as the second choice in the wagering.
Prince Of Tides got a great steer from Andy Miller and won the $58,500 Wiggle It Jiggleit Series final for 3-year-old pacing colts and geldings in 1:49.4.
Dealer’s Table, the 7-5 favorite who was impossible to rate in defeat last week, again was too hot on the front end (hitting three-quarters in 1:21.1), enabling Miller to vacate the pocket - a position he earned by leaving the gate at the start from post eight - and roll by the leader before holding off a determined Stone Hanover, who missed by a big nose after closing well late. World On Edge was third.
Prince Of Tides, a gelded son of Somebeachsomewhere-Tug River Princess who is trained by Ross Croghan, returned $15.80 as the third choice on the tote board.
Pinkman ($5.20 to win as the favorite), the 2015 Hambletonian champion and lifetime earner of better than $2.7 million, was victorious in the first leg of the Mr Muscleman for open trotters in 1:52.4 while Highalator ($5.40 as the public choice) scored in the opening leg of the Golden Receiver for open pacers, stopping the clock in 2:03.4 for the added distance of a mile and an eighth. HIghalator has won three of four starts at the Big M this year.
A LITTLE MORE: 2018 Hambletonian champion Atlanta, who now resides in the Burke barn, qualified impressively Saturday morning in 1:52.3 with new driver Yannick Gingras. She now races without the use of trotting hobbles. Hambletonian hopeful Greenshoe was ultra-impressive, winning in 1:54.1 under wraps with Brian Sears at the controls for trainer Marcus Melander. Melander also has two other high-profile sophomore trotting colts in Green Manalishi S and Gimpanzee. … All-source handle pushed past the magic $3-million mark for the eighth time in 2019, as $3,015,228 was put in play by the Big M faithful. … Racing resumes Friday at 7:15 p.m.

MAJOR CROCKER A, EYE OFA TIGER AS WIN SATURDAY NIGHT 44G CO-FEATURES

BY FRANK DRUCKER, Publicity Director, Empire City @ Yonkers Raceway

YONKERS, NY, Saturday, April 27, 2019—Major  Crocker A (Dan Dube, $8.80) and favored Eye ofa Tiger AS (Jason Bartlett, $4.60) proved best Saturday night (Apr. 27th), winning Yonkers Raceway’s co-featured $44,000 Open Handicaps.
Major Crocker A, from post position No. 4, was handy from first-up in the weekly adult pace. He engaged Caviart Luca (Geortge Brennan) after that one’s seemingly-cheap early intervals of :27.3 and :57.1.
Regardless, Major Crocker A disposed of that one by the 1:24.3 three-quarters. He opened a length-and-three-quarter lead on and out of the final turn, then prevailed by that exact same margin in a life-best 1:52.3.
Micky Gee N (Jordan Stratton), as the 13-10 favorite, badly gapped the winner down the backside before belated getting into second. Third went to Caviart Luca, with Mac’s Jackpot (Brent Holland) and Our Max Phactor N (Bartlett) picking off the remainder.
For third choice Major Crocker A, a 9-year-old Down Under Art Major gelding co-owned (as Allard Racing) by (trainer) Rene Allard, Stephen Klunowski and Kapildeo Singh, it was his second win in nine seasonal starts. The exacta paid $21.20, the triple returned $55 and the superfecta paid $165.
The week’s marquee worked well for Eye ofa Tiger AS who—from post No. 4—was the only leaver and has breaker-incited confusion behind him.
He  went the distance (:28.4, :58.4, 1:26.3, season’s-best 1:55.3), holding off the bid of Will Take Charge (Austin Siegelman) by three-quarters of a length. New Heaven (Holland), Melady’s Monet (Stratton) and In Secret (Brennan) settled for the minor moolah.
For Eye ofa Tiger AS, a 5-year-old Chapter Seven gelding co-owned by ACL Stuteri AB & Kjell Johansson and trained by Anette Lorentzon, it was his fourth win in 11 ’19  tries. The exacta paid $35.60, the triple returned $98 and the superfecta paid $295.50.

Skip Jive wins Vernon Downs feature.

Skip Jive (Jimmy Whittemore) captures the featured Vernon Downs pace ($6,000) on Saturday (April 27).

American Passport (Claude Huckabone Jr.) took the lead and put up all the early fractions (:28.0, :57.0, 1:25.0).

Skip Jive ($5.10) was eighth after three-quarters.  Owned by Diane Whittemore and trained by Marissa Chadbourne, he would fly to the front and hold off a late charge by second place finisher Electrofire (Jennifer Lappe) to win in 1:55.0.  This Baby Rocks (Denny Bucceri) was third best.

Skip Jive is a 6-year-old gelding by Rock N Roll Heaven.  It was his first win of 2019 and 17th career victory.

Mister Lucky Star (Roman Lopez) goes gate to wire to easily win the second division of Robert E. Keller Trotting Series ($4,000) in 1:59.4.  Irish Kate (Claude Huckabone III) was second with Little Dave (Angus MacDonald) finished third.

The second division from leg two of the Keller series was postponed last night (April 26).  It was run on Saturday as a non-betting race.

Mister Lucky Star is a 4-year-old gelding by Mr Cantab.  Trained by Lopez for owners, Joan Ellafrits and Lynn  Wilson, he is two for two in 2019.

John MacDonald drove four winners on Saturday.  His wins were with Jnr Express ($3.00), Jet Rock ($2.50), Sometimes Said ($9.70), and Rockme Socks Off ($4.90).

Live racing returns to Vernon Downs on Friday (May 3) with a post time of 6:10 p.m.

Down On My Luck Good Fortunes Continue At Buffalo

by Brian J. Mazurek, for Buffalo Raceway

HAMBURG, N.Y. --- Down On My Luck has had nothing but good fortune since arriving at Buffalo Raceway after posting his second straight victory in as many appearances locally with a head triumph over Upfront Countryboy in the featured $11,500 Class AA pace.

Making his debut at Buffalo Raceway on April 13, Down On My Luck was spectacular with an eight length in 1:54.2. Things were much tighter this time around, but result was the same, a victory.

Getting a perfect first over trip by Drew Monti, Down On My Luck ($4.30) took command of the race in the stretch but had to dig in late as Upfront Countryboy (Shawn McDonough) put on some serious pressure but missed by a head. Adonis Bay (David McNeight III) and China Dream (JD Wengerd) finished in a dead heat for third.

It was the third win in 12 starts for Down On My Luck (Camluck-False Alert). The 5-year-old gelding, owned by Robert Woodburn and trained by Patrick Shepherd, has now earned $19,414 this year and $96,983 in his career.

In the $11,000 Class AA Pace, Rose Run Ranger ($4.40) made it two straight victories with a gate-to-wire decision over Harry Hoo N in 1:55.3.

With the field dwindled down to five due to the scratches of Heaven Rocks and A F F Bigdaddy, Rose Run Ranger (Ray Fisher Jr.) fired right off the starting vehicle and posted fractions of :29.0, :57.2 and 1:28.0.

There was little suspense through the lane as Rose Run Ranger kept on task and enjoyed a 1-1/2 length advantage on the wire. Harry Hoo N (McDonough) was second with Lucan Hanover (Wengerd) third.

Co-owned by the Burke Racing Stable LLC and Weaver Bruscemi LLC, the 6-year-old gelded Rose Run Ranger (Major In Art-A And Gs Finest) has now found the winner's circle three times in 12 starts. The victory upped his seasonal bankroll to $22,760 and $98,736 lifetime.

Kevin Cummings completed the evening with a driving triple while Fisher Jr. and McDonough had doubles. James Clouser Jr. had a pair of training wins.

Racing will resume on Wednesday evening at 5 p.m. with a nine-race card scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

RECLAMATION ROLLS TO THIRD STRAIGHT AT BIG M

By Dave Little, Meadowlands Media Relations
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Reclamation has been nothing short of dominant of late at the Meadowlands and the Ron Burke trainee ran her win streak to three with another easy victory Friday night at the Big M in a conditioned event for pacing fillies and mares.
Around the first turn, it appeared that Reclamation and longshot Truth And Liberty were in close quarters and possibly locked wheels as Reclamation made her way toward the front and Truth And Liberty was alongside three wide, but driver Yannick Gingras urged Reclamation to the top while parked past the half in :55.3 and said there were no issues.
“I was just protecting position in the first turn,” said Gingras. “Nothing happened to her.”
Reclamation hit three-quarters in 1:23.4 while in high gear and sprinted clear to a 4½-length edge at the head of the stretch before hitting the wire 3½ lengths in front of 25-1 chance Rockin Praline. Brazuca was third.
“She fits this (non-winners of $12,500 or $125,000 lifetime) class for a little longer so hopefully we can wait to find out if she can compete with the preferred mares,” said Gingras. “She doesn’t have much experience and is learning every week.”
Reclamation covered the mile in 1:51.1 over a track labeled ‘good’ to win for the 10th time in 18 lifetime outings. The 4-year-old daughter of A Rocknroll Dance-Art Sale now has career earnings of $63,655 for owners W J Donovan and Donal Murphy.
CAP4 BET BIG AGAIN: The Can-Am Pick-4 was a hot commodity once again as the wager that requires one to select two winners at the Meadowlands and two more at Woodbine Mohawk Park took in wagers totaling $64,937, coming just short of reaching the $65,000 mark for a third time in six tries.
Odds-on favorites scored in the first two legs but after a 34-1 and a 23-1 won the back half, the payoff for the 20-Cent base wager was $361.70.
A LITTLE MORE: Trainer Linda Toscano has a Hambletonian hopeful on her hands. Guaranteed, a Muscle Hill-Beauty Of Gray colt, won his career debut in a non-winners of one in impressive fashion as the 2-5 favorite in 1:53.4 with Tim Tetrick in the bike. … Gingras drove three winners on the card. … The team of trainer Allen Sisco and driver Tyler Buter scored twice at a big price, with Say You Do ($33.80) in the second race and Starsaboveallerage ($48.00) in the 11th. … All-source handle on the 13-race card totaled $2,597,293. … Racing resumes Saturday at 7:15 p.m.

TEQUIILA MONDAY WINS FRIDAY NIGHT 44G DISTAFF DERBY

BY FRANK DRUCKER, Publicity Director, Empire City @ Yonkers Raceway

YONKERS, NY, Friday, April 26, 2019—Tequila Friday?
Odds-on favorite Tequila Monday (Matt Kakaley, $3.70) returned to the adult table and made it look facile Friday night (Apr. 26th), easily winning Yonkers Raceway’s soggy $44,000 Filly and Mare Open Handicap Pace.
Eschewing an early three-hole from post position No. 6, Tequila Monday went around Alexa’s Power (Jason Bartlett) before a moist :27.1 opening-quarter. From there, it turned into equal halves (:56.1, 1:24.2, 1:52.2),  with the eventual winner taking mild grief from last week’s victress, Made of Jewel AS (Jordan Stratton).
Tequila Monday owned a length-and-a-half lead into the lane, and ‘Alexa’ couldn’t do anything about that. The final margin was two lengths, with Lispatty (Mark MacDonald) grabbing the bottom of the ticket. Made of Jewels AS and Dongal Rundlscrk N (Brent Holland) settled for the remainder.
For Tequila Monday, a 5-year-old daughter of American Ideal co-owned by Northfork Racing & Chuck Pompey and trained by Hunter Oakes, it was her fourth win in as many seasonal starts (all at odds-on). The exacta paid $11.20, the triple returned $61 and the superfecta paid $172.

Tataria Wins Vernon Downs feature during rain shortened card.

Tataria (Claude Huckabone III) takes featured fillies and mares pace ($7,000) at Vernon Downs on Friday (April 26).  The race card was cancelled after four races due to inclement weather.

Tataria ($11.60) jumped out of the gate and went right to the lead.  She took them to a first quarter in :27.1 and to the half in :58.1.  Rock My World (Leon Bailey) brushed and rushed from fifth to first, taking them to three-quarters in 1:27.1.

Tataria, who is owned by the Joe Pavia Jr. Stable Inc. and trained by Melissa Beckwith, wasn’t done yet.  She rallied back to take the lead at the top of the stretch and cruised home to win in 1:54.4.  Rock My World had to settle for second.  Mydelight Bluechip (Ben McNeil) Finished third.

Tataria is a 7-year-old mare by Four Starzz Shark.  She won for the second time this season.  She now owns 24 career victories.
Barn Beast (Claude Huckabone Jr.) breezes to easy win in the second leg, first division of Robert E. Keller Trotting Series ($4,000).

Barn Beast ($2.10) would take control just before the three-quarter mark.   She flew down the stretch to get a new lifetime mark of 1:59.3.  Royal Trumpery (Angus MacDonald) came up to finish second.  Massive Impressive (Ronald Harp) was third best.

Barn Beast is a 3-year-old colt by Credit Winner.  She is owned by Purple Haze Stables with Nancy Pratt and trainer Steven Pratt.  It was her second win this season.  She now has three lifetime wins.

Live racing returns to Vernon Downs on Saturday (April 27) with a 12 race card starting at 6:10 p.m.

Southern Palms Takes Upset Win At Buffalo Raceway

by Brian J. Mazurek, for Buffalo Raceway

HAMBURG, N.Y. --- Southern Palms had to sit back and watch patiently as four trotters enjoyed the lead during Buffalo Raceway's $10,500 Class A main event on Friday night (April 26). But when it counted the most, at the wire, Southern Palms was the one who got the victory.

Able to weave through traffic during the final half mile, Southern Palms (David McNeight III) found racing room in the 'lightning lane' and edged by Empire Earl N by a neck in 2:01.0 over the sloppy track to notch the $31.00 upset.

All This Commotion, Lucky Guess, Are You In and Empire Earl N all had a taste of the top during the mile while Southern Palms was mired in seventh. Finding different paths down the backstretch the final time, Southern Palms positioned himself perfectly in the dash to the finish line.

There was plenty of room in the passing lane for Southern Palms and he was able to catch the stubborn Empire Earl N (Jim Morrill Jr.) in the shadow of the wire. Are You In (Kevin Cummings) took third place.

Owned by Mike Torcello and trained by Gerry Sarama, Southern Palms is a 6-year-old gelding who scored his first victory of the season in seven attempts. The win pushed his 2019 earnings to $16.890 and $281,631 lifetime.

Kyle Cummings had his first triple of his young career while Morrill Jr. had two victories on the night. Tammy Cummings, Kyle's mother, had three training wins.

Racing will continue on Saturday evening with a 10-race program scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. There's a $2,205 carryover in the Pick-5 which begins in the second race.

Closing-night feature lures Allmyx’sliventexas

By Mark Ratzky, publicity – Cal Expo Harness

Allmyx’sliventexas, fresh from a victory in the Lloyd Arnold Pace, looks to close out the Cal Expo meet with another score in the featured $7,000 Open Pace.

Watch and Wager LLC will present 10 races to bring down the curtain with first post at 7:10 p.m. and the main event is scheduled as the seventh contest on the evening.

A 6-year-old homebred son of Hi Ho Silverheel’s out of the Distinguishedbaron mare Annie Get Your Gun, Allmyx’sliventexas carries the banner of Wayne and Rod Knittel, is conditioned by Bob Johnson and will as usual have Mooney Svendsen in the sulky.

The hard-hitting performer comes into this assignment with 30 wins from his 87 lifetime trips to the post, a $168,00 bank account and a 1:50 flat mark that was established last year at Hoosier Park.

Sent off the 1-5 favorite in last week’s Arnold, Allmyx’sliventexas brushed to command on the backside, held a clear advantage to the drive and prevailed by a length and a half over I’m An Athlete.

The latter will be looking to turn the tables for owner Ronald Rettig-Zucchi, trainer Jessie Pacheco and pilot Luke Plano. He recently went over the $200,000 earnings plateau with a 1:51 standard that was set over this track last year.

Completing the field are King Of The Crop, Blue Star Maverick, Better In The Bank and Coz and Effect.

Meet finale features mandatory payouts

With this being closing night of the meet, there will be mandatory payouts for all wagers.

A reminder that a reduced 16 percent takeout rate is offered on the 50-cent Pick 5, which covers the first five races of the evening; and the 20-cent Pick 4, which comes with a $40,000-guaranteed gross pool.

Congratulations to Kathie Plested, who long ago locked up the training title here, while it looks like the driver’s crown may come right down to the wire with James Kennedy holding a one-length advantage on Mooney Svendsen.

Plested put the training race on ice long ago and comes into the final weekend of racing having made 77 trips to the charmed enclosure. While Gordie Graham is a distant second, it should be noted his 40 wins have come from just 138 starters.

Kennedy had a clear advantage in the driver’s race going into last weekend, but Svendsen is coming a fast last quarter and has really tightening things up going into the last two programs.

                                         ***

Said Cal Expo general manager Chris Schick, "Despite some tough weather conditions, and the early on loss of a weekend due to smoke from the Paradise fire, the meet was very safe and successful.

“The legislation enabling the International signal importation beginning January 1 has been a nice boost. Overnight purses were raised eight percent coming in to the meet, and we are happy to announce a further six percent increase beginning opening night of our next meet on November 9.

“The industry has also come together on a monumental Stakes program beginning in 2021. This plan has been extremely well received by our owners, breeders and horseman. Our next big challenge is to make sure we have a seat at the table for the anticipated coming of sports wagering to California. We are excited about the industry's future."

BILLINGS SERIES AT FREEHOLD ON SAT. APR. 27 THEN TO MIAMI VALLEY ON SUN.APR. 28

by John Manzi, for the Billings Harness Driving Series,
MONTICELLO, NY—Although there were events for Billings members in early April at Pompano Park the granddaddy of all amateur driving programs, the CKG Billings Harness Driving Series, will get underway in earnest on Saturday, April 27 at Freehold Raceway and then move to Miami Valley Raceway the following afternoon.
Both programs have been drawn and most notable is the purse increase at both venues. At Freehold the lady and gentlemen drivers will compete for a $9000 purse while at Miami Valley they'll go for $8,000.
But competitors will find that they'll be racing for more money than in the past at many venues. At Scioto Downs the purse will be $10,000; at the Meadowlands, $11,000; at the Meadows-$12,000; and at Woodbine Mohawk; $12,000.
Both Tony “the Capo” Verruso, Billings Series president, and Steve “You're Never Too” Oldford, the series vice president, worked diligently in an effort to formulate an admirable program.
Tony and I adjusted the schedule a bit concentrating on the tracks that get the most participation, “Oldford noted. “The big add in the West this year is The Meadows where we have five legs and the West Gold Cup.  Northfield Park has eight legs total.   Purses are up at all tracks which we hope will bring out more participation.
We will again have our youth program which allows those under 25 years old, with under 50 pro wins, to race for free.  It worked well last year.  Two up and coming amateur drivers to watch are Mariah Wright and Alysha Binkley, both very good and should be at our West opener at Miami Valley next Sunday.”
We have also added some condition allowances for amateur horses to help benefit those who race mostly in amateur races,” Verruso added.
Once again the Billings Series -now in its 38th season--will offer opportunities for competitions nearly weekly until late November. According to Billings Series president Tony Verruso, one big difference this season will be the elimination of the Silver Cup Final in in lieu of an East and West $25,000 Gold Cup Championships.

Contentious cast set for Kirk Breed Pace

By Mark Ratzky, publicity – Cal Expo Harness

A well-matched field of top-class pacing fillies and mares will take center stage Friday night at Cal Expo in the $10,000 Kirk Breed Pace.

A 10-race program is on tap under the Watch and Wager LLC banner with first post at 7:10 p.m. and the main event will go as the sixth contest on the evening.

Trainer Kathie Plested looks to have a strong hand in the race with Capitol Hill and Dancingonthesand representing the shedrow. The former is owned by the trainer and George McChrystal with Steve Wiseman guiding, while Dancingonthesand races for the trainer and Alan Cooper with Mooney Svendsen at the controls.

As has often been the case at the head of the distaff pacing class, last week’s Open saw an upset as Capitol Hill sat a pocket trip for Wiseman and came home smartly to get the job done by a length and a half as a 15-1 shot.

Dancingonthesand has recorded six wins from her 10 trips to the post on the season and the long-fused mare looms large. Her most recent tally came on April 6, as she did the stalk-and-pounce to perfection to win going away.

Legio X Equestris is going in very sharp form at the moment for owner David Shell and trainer Luke Plano with a win and two seconds from the last three clashes at the top rung here. Ryan Grundy guides the daughter of Roll With Joe and she was a 1:53 victress two back in a handy coast-to-coast decision.

Completing the field are Lickcreek Speedway, Brighten Your Life, Delightfully Wild and Magnifique.

Kirk Breed, Tony Miller remembered with races

Friday’s Kirk Breed Pace is named for the man who served as executive director of the California Horse Racing Board from 2008 until his death at the age of 73 in 2013; while the Tony Miller Memorial is in honor of the harness valet here at Cal Expo who passed away recently at age 56.

Mr. Breed was appointed as general manager at Cal Expo during the first term of Gov. Jerry Brown in 1979, and was credited with turning around the event’s financial fortune during lean times.

He later became a lobbyist on behalf of the racing industry and also served for eight years on the Cal Expo board of directors. The Oklahoma native loved horses and worked tirelessly to reduce equine fatalities and improve track safety for horses, jockeys and drivers.

Tony Miller was a third-generation horsemen who was an owner, thoroughbred valet and most recently harness valet here at Cal Expo for the past 12 years. He passed away after a battle with colon cancer.

The 14-year-old pacing mare Blue Note will be making the final start of her career Friday evening when she suits up in the evening’s fifth race and there will be a special ceremony prior to that start in the winner’s circle to honor this popular performer.

Rick Cisco owns and trains the daughter of Little Steven, who is out of the Denali mare Romantic Music. She comes into her final assignment with 37 wins from her 321 appearances, $155,000 in her bank account and a 1:54 1/5 mark that was set here two years ago

“She’s a gem, and always tries her heart out,” Cisco said. “I want to be sure to credit Luke Plano, because he’s had a lot of success driving her over the years. The plan is to send her to Minnesota, where she’ll be bred to Wind Me Up.”

COMPETITIVE RACING FUELING BIG M RESURGENCE

Meadowlands Media Relations
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – When legislators and Gov. Phil Murphy said yes to a $20 million yearly appropriation to support horse racing in the State of New Jersey, Garden State horsemen were predictably pleased that the purses they would go for would increase considerably.
But would the fans react in a way that would make one think harness racing’s lifeline would lengthen? Thus far, the answer is a resounding ‘Yes!’.
The Meadowlands has been able to withstand the yearly opening of Pennsylvania’s harness venues unscathed having been able to battle them on a level playing field for the precious horse population with purses that have experienced two significant increases in the last two months.
The proof? Last Saturday (April 20), Big M players wagered $3,046,148 on the 13-race card, as betting exceeded the $3 million mark for the seventh time this year. In addition, over the course of the 32 race cards contested at the Meadowlands in 2019, 29 have seen handle of at least $2.5 million.
Big fields and big competition in evenly-matched races are what the Big M faithful crave. “Over the last four racing programs, only nine favorites have won from 52 races,” said track Chief Operating Officer and General Manager Jason Settlemoir. “The current percentage of winning favorites at the Meadowlands is 38. Of harness tracks currently racing, the median percentage is 46. In fact, our 38 percent compares right there with some of the top thoroughbred tracks. Often, the knock on harness racing is how easily horses make the lead and win, but we’ve had great racing with non-stop action, which makes it possible for horses to win from anywhere.”
According to Brisnet, Santa Anita (36 percent), Tampa Bay (36) and Gulfstream (37) are right there with the Big M when it comes to winning chalks.
Last Friday (April 19), despite bad weather that arrived early in the evening, the action was plentiful.
A new wagering high was established in the Can-Am Pick-4, which saw $65,333 in action. Those who went four-for-four cashed in for $87.17 for the bet with the 20-Cent base wager and low 15 percent takeout.
One lucky patron wagering on the Meadowlands' signal into the Oregon hub went home with a huge smile on his or her face in the 13th race 20-Cent Jackpot Super High-Five. After 10-1 shot Knightofvictory held off 5-2 favorite Prince Of Minto after a stirring stretch duel, that player holding the only ticket with the winning combination of 6-8-1-10-3 cashed in for $68,059.
When live action resumes Friday at 7:15 p.m., racing fans will have a big carryover to shoot for, as the ‘other’ 20-Cent Jackpot Super High-Five will start out with $82,307 in the hat in race five.
For 20-Cent Can-Am Pick-4 and Meadowlands’ 50-Cent Pick-4 players, free program pages are available at www.playmeadowlands.com and www.ustrotting.com.
Saturday’s $3-million night was highlighted by the eighth race, when a total of $341,302 was pushed through the windows, with the always prolific 50-Cent Pick-4 accounting for $116,859 of the pot. Only once in 2019 has the Pick-4 had a larger pool, when $134,614 was put in play on March 2.
1 MILLION PENNY GIVEAWAY: On all live racing nights during April, make sure to try and win one or more of many prizes totaling $10,000 in the Big M’s “1 Million Penny Giveaway”.
Guests may enter once per live race day. The month-long contest concludes Saturday (April 27).

HORSEPLAY ALLOWED: Come on out to the Meadowlands on Friday (May 3) and take your best shot in the track’s Horseplay Giveaway.

In addition, for each horse that makes it into the target car, the Meadowlands will donate $10 to a designated charity. During May, the money will go to A Lot to Grow.

HP Sissy Slingshots To Win At Buffalo Raceway

by Brian J. Mazurek, for Buffalo Raceway

HAMBURG, N.Y. --- HP Sissy used a slingshot move around the clubhouse turn the final time and that big brush proved to be the right one as she captured the $11,500 Class A Open Handicap Pace for the filly and mares at Buffalo Raceway Wednesday evening (April 24).

Entering the event with five victories in 10 starts and only finishing out of the money in just one race, HP Sissy was surprisingly overlooked by the betting public. She posted a half length win over the heavily favored Lady London in a seasonal best 1:54.4 over the fast track and returned $14.60 to her faithful backers.

After watching You Mach Me Crazy put up fractions of :27.3 and :57.0 to the opening half, HP Sissy and driver Jim Morrill Jr. tipped three-wide midway around the third turn and left the pace-setter in her wake.

Easily clearing to the top hitting the three-quarter station, HP Sissy paced home smartly from there as Lady London (Shawn McDonough) couldn't cut into the lead. Sportsmuffler (Drew Monti) managed to take the third place position.

Owned by Finocchario's Dream Stable and trained by Mike Ohol, HP Sissy (Up The Credit-Monica Blue Chip) has won six times in 11 tries. The victory upped the 6-year-old mare's earnings to $38,583 in 2019 and $289,719 lifetime.

Morrill Jr. and Ray Fisher Jr. finished the evening with triples while McDonough had a pair of winners. Trainers Jim Graham and Ryan Swift were victorious twice.

Racing will continue on Friday evening at 5 p.m. with a nine-race card scheduled. There's a $768 carryover in the Pick-5 which begins in the second race.

Survive & Win in the Meadowlands Championship Meet Survival Challenge

The always popular Meadowlands Championship Meet Survival Challenge powered by 123Racing is back for the 2019 Championship Meet. Cash prizes and World Harness Handicapping Championship seats are up for grabs in this online competition  which begins Friday, May 3rd.  Registration is now open.

Trackmaster will provide Platinum Past Performances for each night of the contest.
The game covers the Meadowlands’ Championship Meet, featuring millions in stakes races and the best pacers and trotters in the sport.  The game concludes on Hambletonian Day, Saturday, August 3, 2019.

The winner is determined by the highest total bankroll at the end of the Challenge based on a $2 “across the board” wager [win, place and show] on selections for three designated races each program.

However, to continue in the game, entrants have to “survive” by finishing in-the-money [first through third] with at least one of their selections each day.  Failing to do so or not making selections knocks the player out of the game.  To aid in the player’s survival one “lucky horseshoe” is given.  The lucky horseshoe is a “free pass” given to all Challenge participants that allows the player to survive if he does not make selections for a race card or all three of his selections fail to hit the board.

The grand prize is $1,000 & 2020 WHHC Spot
The second-place prize is $500 & 2020 WHHC Spot
The third-place prize is $250 & 2020 WHHC Spot
Most Winners prize is $250

The contest is open to legal residents of the United States and Canada 18 years and older, and all selections must be made through the format provided on the Survival Challenge website page.  No selections will be accepted by phone, fax, e-mail or any other means.  Trackmaster Platinum Past performances for the three designated races will be provided through the game board.

The deadline for selections each day is 30 minutes before 7:15 p.m. post time for the first race.  The only exception being Hambletonian Day, Saturday, August 3 [post time 12 noon].  After 30 minutes to post, all selections are final.

BY FRANK DRUCKER, Publicity Director, Empire City @ Yonkers Raceway

YONKERS, NY, Tuesday, April 23, 2019—Rich and Miserable (Dave Miller, $11.80) snapped odds-on Swansea (George Brennan) at the line Tuesday night (Apr. 23rd), winning the $73,000 final of Yonkers Raceway/Standardbred Owners Association of New York Bonus Trotting Series.
Away last among the octet from post position No. 7, Rich and Miserable saw 4-5 favorite Swansea—he of the 3-for-3 preliminary-round resume—make the lead well before a :28.3 opening quarter-mile. Eight-holer Joey Bats (Jason Bartlett) floated out, then moved to engage the leader from the second turn, passing a :56.3 half-mile.
‘Joey’ eventually jumped in Turn 3, leaving a pocket-inheriting Whether or No Fi (Yannick Gingras) as Swansea’s closest pursuer..Chasin’ Dreams (Jordan Stratton) was making some inroads in and out of a 1:25 three-quarters, with Rich and Miserable chasin’ Chasin’ Dreams.
Swansea, meanwhile, owned a length-and-a-half lead entering the lane, but Rich and Miserable was widest and fastest. From 10 lengths out of the intermission, he whipped Swansea by a schnoz in 1:55.1. Whether or No Fi, Chasin’ Dreams and No Excuses (Scott Zeron) came away with the remainder, while an outrun Omaha Omaha (Tim Tetrick) and misbehavers Joey Bats and Henderson Seelster (Mark MacDonald) brought up the rear.

YONKERS, NY, Monday, April 22, 2019—There’s a cool $73,000 up for grabs Tuesday night (Apr. 23rd) in the final of Yonkers Raceway/Standardbred Owners Association of New York Bonus Trotting Series.

The 4-year-old Swan for All gelding landed post position No. 3 in the seventh-race finale, with George Brennan driving for co-owners Triple D Stables & Dana Parham and trainer Scott DiDomenico.
For the season, Swansea has seven wins and three seconds in a dozen starts ($91,375).
Joey Bats (Jason Bartlett, post 8) sandwiched a pair of series wins around a second to Swansea. The 4-year-old Holiday Road gelding, 4-for-7 this season, is trained by Andrew Harris for  co-owners Marc Reynolds, Scott Dillon and Michele Nelson.
Rich and Miserable (Dave Miller, post 7) uncorked a solid rally to chase home Joey Bats a week ago after he won his previous start, while Chasin’ Dreams (Jordan Stratton, post 6) had a win, a second and a third in his trio of tries.
Omaha Omaha (Tim Tetrick, post 1), Henderson Seelster (Mark MacDonald, post 2), No Excuses (Scott Zeron, post 4) and Whether or Not Fi (Yannick Gingras, post 5) round out the roster.

SHARTIN N WINS 11TH B-C MATCHMAKER

BY FRANK DRUCKER, Publicity Director, Empire City @ Yonkers Raceway

YONKERS, NY, Saturday, April 20, 2019—“She’s a tough SOB with big lungs.”
Even-money favorite Shartin N (Tim Tetrick, $4) employed the same tactic she did a season ago, winning Saturday night’s (Apr. 20th) $402,600 final of Yonkers Raceway’s Blue Chip Matchmaker.
As was the case in the evening $663,260 final of the George Morton Levy Memorial Pacing Series, both were the richest incarnations in the respective histories.
Shartin N, from post position No. 6 among the high-end mares, was away fourth as Feelin’ Red Hot (George Brennan) and Apple Bottom Jeans (Corey Callahan) were dueling early. The latter retook from the former by the :27.2 opening quarter-mile before Shartin N was out and moving again.
She made the lead just before a :55.2 intermission, then finished off the 11th Matchmaker from there (1:23.3, 1:52.1) in her fastest purse mile of the season, Shartin N became the first lass to defend this race’s title and the first to win it more than once.
From the hinterlands came uncoupled stablemate Bettor Joy N (Dexter Dunn) to get second, beaten a length-and-a-half, with Apple Bottom Jeans, Don’t Think Twice A (Jason Bartlett) and Seaswift Joy N (Jim Marohn Jr.) settling for the smaller envelopes.
A first-up Kaitlyn N (Matt Kakaley), Ideal Lifestyle A (Jordan Stratton) and a backpedaling Feelin’ Red Hot brought up the rear.
For Shartin N, a 6-year-old Down Under Tintin in America miss co-owned by her escort, Richard Poillucci and Jo Ann Looney-King & trained by Jim King Jt. it was her fourth win in five starts. The exacta paid $21.60, the triple returned $77.50 and the superfecta paid $301.50.
“I’ve put her in spots before where I didn’t think she would reach and she just digs down and finds something,” Tetrick said. “When I saw Corey (Callahan, with Apple Bottom Jeans) had to go hard to get the lead, let George (Brennan, Feelin’ Red Hot) go and retake, I thought I’d take my chance and push the envelope and he let me go.
“(Shartin N) is a great mare; she’s proven it time in and time out,” Tetrick said. “For her to do what she’s done, make a million dollars (in 2018), it speaks for itself.”
A $75,000 series consolation was won by Tetrick-driven and King Jr.-trained Newborn Sassy ($3.50) in a career-ending 1:54. The 6-year-old lass, who’s off to be bred to Captaintreacherous, retires with 33 wins in 92 career starts and just under $1,1 million.
“There’s a special place in my heart for her,” Tetrick said.
