Winning Legends and Ideal Jimmy win Tioga features.

Winning Legends (Justin Huckabone) and Ideal Jimmy (Jody Jamieson) capture the co-features at Tioga Downs Sunday (May 30).

Winning Legends ($7.00) breezes to an easy win in the $9,000 Open Trot.

Creekside Pete (Corey Braden) got the first call but Winning Legends takes control just before hitting the first quarter in :28.0.  I Got The Looks (Drew Monti) made the first move coming first-over on the way to the half.  Winning Legends reached the half first in :57.4.  As they went down the backstretch Winning Legends shook off the challenge and led to three-quarters in 1:25.1.

As they made the turn for home Creekside Pete popped out of the pocket and took to the chase but Winning Legends was too strong and won easily in 1:54.3.  Creekside Pete had to settle for second.  I got The Looks finished third.

Winning Legends is a 6-year-old gelding by Winning Mister.  He is trained by Huckabone for owner Jonathan Applebaum.  It was his third win of the season.  He got career victory number 18.

Ideal Jimmy ($7.90) charges late to take the $9,000 Open Pace.

Ideal Jimmy went straight to lead.  Rebellious (Wally Hennessey) came first-over to take control just after Ideal Jimmy hit the first quarter first in :27.1.  Rebellious controlled the pace with a :28.1 second quarter.  He quickened up the pace with a backside :27.1 third quarter.  He hit three-quarters in 1:22.3.

As they headed to the stretch Ideal Jimmy pounced out of the pocket and went right on by in deep stretch to win in a lifetime best of 1:50.1.  Rebellious had to settle for second money.  Waimac Attack N (Michael Merton) finished third best.

Ideal Jimmy is an 8-year-old gelding by Western Ideal.  He is owned by D R Van Witzenburg and trained by Erv Miller.  Ideal Jimmy won for the fourth time this season.  He now has 29 career victories.

TONY BELTRAMI; BOB HECHKOFF; AHDC WINNERS AT FREEHOLD ON MAY 29

by John Manzi for the American Harness Drivers Club

Freehold, NJ—Even money favorites prevailed in the two $9000 American Harness Drivers Club trots at Freehold Raceway today (May 29). Tony Beltrami won his division with Keystone Orion in 2:00.4 and Bob Hechkoff scored with Southern Frost in 2:00.3 in the other. Both events were contested over a sloppy race track and both winners went wire to wire in their respective splits.

Keystone Orion set sails from the two-hole and Beltrami had him well in command the entire mile.

With no challenges Keystone Orion breezed by the quarter in :29.3. Chip Allen and Swipe Right were the first to move as the field headed for the half. At that point Keystone Orion rebuffed all challenges and led the field by the half in 1:00.4.  And was well in command as they trotted by the three quarters in 1:30.4. Although Swipe Right moved out to challenge the leader Keystone Orion put it in another gear and opened daylight and cruised home a two-length winner. Presidente Zette took home the show dough for Joe Faraldo.

The winner, a 12 year old Angus Hall gelding, is owned by Fabiola Ouevedo and trained by Edwin Ouevedo. He paid $4.00 for win.

In the second division Southwind Frost proved too much for his competition after Hechkoff sent him to the lead and forced a challenging Fiji (Dave Offenberg) to find a seat before the :29.1 first quarter.

Once in complete control Hechkoff and his charge cruised by the half in 1:00.3 and they were still alone as they trotted by the three quarters in 1:30.4. Heading for home only the margin of victory was in doubt and when Southwind Frost crossed the finish line he was a 2-3/4 length winner. Fiji followed the leader home for the place money while Dawn Anderson hustled Take A Wish home for the show dough.

Southwind Frost is owned by Hechkoff's R.B.H. Ventures and trained by Vincent Stallworth. He returned a $4.00 win mutuel.

BELTASSIMA, REALLY FAST TAKE NJSS FINALS AT BIG M

By Dave Little, Meadowlands Media Relations

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – Beltassima and Really Fast shrugged off the sloppy conditions on a brutal night weather-wise and utilized high early speed to win their respective $200,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes Finals for 3-year-olds on the trot at The Meadowlands Friday night.

Beltassima was superb in taking the division for fillies from post 10 in 1:54.1. Andy McCarthy had the daughter of Trixton-Beltane Hanover away quickly from the outside post in the full field but didn’t necessarily have designs on the top.

“I figured it would be tough from out there, but I figured I’d leave and take a spot somewhere,” said McCarthy, “but when I saw that there weren’t a lot of horses leaving, I went on with it. I just went into it thinking I’d figure it out as it went.”

Beltassima cleared 2-1 favorite Wet My Whistle just after the quarter before ‘Whistle’ immediately moved right back to the top. It was those two around the track until McCarthy found some space from the two-hole inside the eighth pole.

“I got squeezed a little bit there,” said McCarthy of being in tight quarters in the stretch, “but I waited until I got clearance.”

The Tony Alagna trainee took it from there, reporting home a neck winner over a fast-closing Avenir. Wet My Whistle held third.

“I wasn’t surprised [she won],” said McCarthy, “she’s been terrific.”

As the fifth choice in the betting, Beltassima returned $29.20 to her backers in winning her second straight and fourth from 10 lifetime starts. Her lifetime bankroll stands at $154,287.

In the split for colts and geldings, the Nancy Takter-trained Really Fast scored despite making only his fourth lifetime start.

“To race like that in the pouring rain,” said Takter, “it was a good performance. I was really happy with my horse.”

The son of Muscle Hill-Stubborn Belle was away alertly from post five in the 10-horse field and was on the point at the quarter in :27.4. Cuatro De Julio then made an authoritative brush to command before the half as the pair raced 1-2 into the stretch.

At the eighth pole, driver Yannick Gingras moved Really Fast off the rail and got by a stubborn Cuatro De Julio by a neck in a lifetime-best 1:52.2. Sonofamistery was third. Lindysmusclemania, the 4-5 favorite who was so impressive winning two weeks ago in 1:51.4, sat a four-hole to the half and went off stride while first-over nearing the far turn and finished eighth.

“He really does not have the experience of any of the other horses [he faced].” said Takter of Really Fast. “My horse was super. I was pretty confident he was going to get by. I’m going to be conservative with him. The first time he’ll race back-to-back weeks will be the Hambletonian elimination and final.”

Really Fast, who now has three career victories, paid $15.20 as the fourth choice in the betting and now has $121,750 in his bank account.

NON-BETTORS: There were a pair of $100,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes Finals for 3-year-olds on the pace that were contested as non-betting events weaved in between the pari-mutuel races on the card.

Neverendingproject (Great Vintage-Project Terror) took the filly division for driver Russell Foster and trainer Eric Foster in 2:01.1 while Fika Time (a gelding by Sunfire Blue Chip-Raiders Favorite) ran his winning streak to three winning the split for colts and geldings for driver Tim Tetrick and trainer Chase Vandervort in 1:56.2.

A LITTLE MORE: Alagna and Nifty Norman both recorded training triples on the card. … All-source wagering totaled $3,130,111, the 17th consecutive program to see wagering top the $3-million mark. … Racing resumes Saturday at 6:20 p.m.

The Thrill of Hoofbeats is Back

County fair harness racing returns to Illinois

HINSDALE, Illinois – The thrill of thundering hooves returns to Illinois county fairs this year after the pandemic closed fairgrounds in 2020. Across the Prairie State, 27 county fairs will feature harness horse racing with the first races to begin June 5th at the Macon County Fair in Decatur, Illinois.

“There is a lot of optimism in the sport right now,” said IHHA President Clark Fairley. “Breeding numbers are up. The number of foals born is up. Fans can expect great competition and excitement not only at the county fairs but also at the Springfield and DuQuoin State Fairs.”

The number of foals born in 2020 was 354, up from 144 born in 2018. And while that is a far cry from the peak of 2,535 horses born in 1984, it is solid growth that can be built upon. Because of the recently passed “racino” bill, Illinois-bred horses will be racing for larger purses and better racing opportunities in the years to come and that has driven interest in owning Illinois Standarbred racehorses.

At the Illini Classic yearling sale this year, Super Bowl champion linebacker Devin White made news when he purchased three Illinois-bred Standardbred horses with his friend Adam Hawthorne. Hawthorne said that they plan to race the horses in the Illinois county fair circuit this year.

“Devin is really excited to get into the business,” said Hawthorne. “This is his first time getting involved in horse racing and we plan to buy more Illinois-bred horses next year. Illinois is my favorite state to race in, bar none.”

Illinois horsemen are hopeful that the racino bill will pump new life into the sport which has seen other states like Indiana and Ohio invest more into their horse racing industry. Those investments translate into tens of thousands of jobs from blacksmiths to equine veterinarians, hay and grain dealers, grooms, trainers, and more.

At its peak, Illinois harness racing employed around 40,000 people, most of them in agricultural jobs.

“It’s a labor-intensive sport,” said Fairley. “One racehorse employs as many as five people.”
County fair races run from June 5th to September 8th. Racing will be held at the Springfield State Fair August 13 and 14, and August 18 and 19. The DuQuoin State Fair will host races on August 27 and 28.

SMALL TAKEOUTS LEAD TO BIG PLAY AT BIG M

Meadowlands Media Relations

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – The Meadowlands is popular with players given the half-dozen opportunities they are given nightly to dive into large pools that offer a low takeout of 15 percent. What sometimes gets lost in the shuffle is the fact that almost all other Big M wagers have bets that have takeouts of just 17 and 20 percent.

Here are the six wagers that offer the 15 percent takeout, and what their average pools have been during the first three weeks of May:

·         Race 1: 20-cent Pick-5 ($90,897)

·         Race 3: 20-cent Survivor Pick-7 ($15,408)

·         Race 6: 50-cent Pick-4 ($119,634)

·         Race 8: 20-cent Pick-6 ($22,934)

·         Race 10: 50-cent Pick-4 ($113,522)

·         Race 13: 10-cent Hi-5/Pentafecta ($33,044)

“We have priced our wagering menu to attract horseplayers from all around the world,” said track Chief Operating Officer and General Manager Jason Settlemoir. “The lower takeouts create more winners, and without winners, there is no game.”

“The lower minimums have attracted a new demographic of players who can now bet more combinations and last longer. When you put all those things together, along with fantastic races to wager on every weekend, you get the consistently monstrous handle numbers we have seen during 2021. Last weekend, we extended our streak of consecutive $3-million-handle nights to 16, a record that can be attributed to our top-flight racing, low takeout wagers and an incredibly loyal fan base, for whom we are very appreciative.”

The competitive racing at The Big M always gives players a shot at a score, and thus far in May, score they have, with the Survivor Pick-7 leading the way with an average payoff of $4,529.

The Pick-5 is next, averaging $4,515, followed by the Pick-6 ($3,582), Hi-5/Pentafecta ($1,851), Late Pick-4 ($1,321) and Early Pick-4 ($668).

Across-the-board bettors get a fair shake at The Meadowlands, as win, place and show bets have a 17 percent takeout. Daily Double and Exacta wagers are at 19 percent takeout while Superfectas and Pick-3s have a 20 percent rake.

On Saturday, the Exacta was as popular as ever. Of the $3.7 million in total handle, over $1 million of that was bet on the Exacta alone, accounting for 28 percent of all wagering on the 14-race card.

FASTER, FASTER! “We have seen an extraordinary group of fast horses competing during May,” said Settlemoir. “For example, we had 49 races for male pacers this month, and 23 of those went under-1:50.”

Proof of the high-octane horses competing at the mile oval came last Saturday (May 22), when the fastest mile of the year in the sport was equaled by Nicholas Beach, who stopped the clock in 1:47.2 just one week after American History recorded an identical time for the mile.

Xenia's Chip Goes Lifetime Best In Buffalo Victory

by Brian J. Mazurek, for Buffalo Raceway

HAMBURG, N.Y. --- Xenia's Chip was way too powerful for the ladies down the stretch in Buffalo Raceway's $10,000 Class A Open Pace for the filly and mares on Wednesday night (May 26) and pulled off a $23.20 shocker in a lifetime best of 1:56.2 over the fast track.

Sitting third approaching the three-quarter marker, Xenia's Chip (David McNeight III) went first over and got on even terms with the pace setting Robintheatm (Jim Morrill Jr.) approaching the head of the stretch.

From there, Xenia's Chip left little doubt who was going to win as she exploded down the lane and turned back the late attempt by Protect Blue Chip (Travis Henry) and Ellieonthemove (Kevin Cummings).

Owned by Keith Pinkowski and trained by Jim Graham, it was the fourth trip to the winner's circle in 13 outings this season for the 4-year-old mare Xenia's Chip (Heston Blue Chip-Xenia Hanover). The win jacked her seasonal bankroll to $22,321 and $63,359 in her young career.

Lady Dudette (Kyle Cummings) scorched the field in the middle two splits with a :57.2 clocking and that proved to be more than enough to capture the $7,900 Class B Pace for the filly and mares.

Taking the lead off the starting gate, Lady Dudette ($7.70) went a leisurely opening panel of :30.1. Then with fractions of :58.4 and 1:27.3, Lady Dudette turned for home in front by two lengths and moved smartly to the line to beat the favored Robintheatm (Morrill Jr.) by three lengths in 1:56.2. Who's Got The Move (Shawn McDonough) got up for the third place check.

Trained by Tammy Cummings and owned by driver Kyle Cummings, it was the third victory in 14 tries this season for the 6-year-old mare Lady Dudette (Bettor's Delight-Luxury Goods). The win moved her 2021 earnings to $17,911 and $188,874 lifetime.

The $7,900 Class B Trot came down to a two horse race as Big Bill Breeze (McDonough) and Le Millenaire (Morrill Jr.) battled to the line and after a photo finish in 1:59.2, the pair had to share top honors settle for a dead heat.

Big Bill Breeze ($2.70) is trained by McDonough and co-owned by Rocco Stebbins and Benjamin Ortiz. It was his fourth victory in 13 attempts.

Le Millenaire ($2.90) is conditioned by Lisa Mariacher and owned by Erin Moran. He has now scored two victories in 15 starts on the campaign.

Kyle Cummings, Kevin Cummings, Ray Fisher Jr. and McDonough all had driving doubles with Ryan Swift and McDonough collecting two training victories each.

Racing will continue on Saturday night at 6 p.m. with 12 events scheduled.

IT’S ACADEMIC, BEADS GRADUATE AT BIG M

By Dave Little, Meadowlands Media Relations

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – It’s Academic and Beads both displayed high speed while winning the two $50,000 divisions of the opening leg of the Graduate Series for 4-year-old Open trotters at The Meadowlands Saturday night.

It’s Academic, off a win at Scioto Downs in the Charlie Hill Memorial, had the confidence of his driver heading into the race.

“He’s a beauty to drive,” said Yannick Gingras before the Graduate. “He’s super sharp and should perform well tonight.”

He did just that.

It’s Academic had to work hard from post four in the nine-horse field to make the front, unable to clear past El Ideal until the half while parked in a snappy :54.2. Things did not get any easier for the Ron Burke trainee from there, as pressure would come from Ab’sattitudexpress to three-quarters, which was timed in 1:23.4.

Gingras then coaxed a burst of energy from the son of Uncle Peter-Annapolis to get clear by 2½ lengths as they straightened up in the stretch and was cruising through the lane to an apparent easy win.

But Hypnotic AM emerged off a third-over trip and was flying late. “I did get a third-quarter breather,” said Gingras. “But I almost got caught sleeping there. The wire came just in time.”

It’s Academic, who’s now won 17-of-32 starts and earned $585,688 lifetime, paid $3.60 to win as the 4-5 favorite and finished a head in front of Hypnotic AM in 1:51.1. Hillexotic was third.

Beads brought his ‘A’ game in the second Graduate split, powering down the road in a season’s-best-equaling 1:50.2 on the trot, a time that he established in a Big M qualifier eight days ago.

“They told me the best way to get along with him is to keep him busy, talk to him a lot,” said winning driver Dave Miller, who was behind the son of Archangel-Nepentha for the first time. “So I did and he felt comfortable the whole way.”

Beads fired off the gate from post six and was on the point while parked in :26.4. The Per Engblom trainee then reached the half in :55 and three-quarters in 1:23.4, and off that middle-half of :57, had little trouble sprinting away from the pocket-sitting Sorella, who weakened and finished sixth.

The winner hit the finish 2¼ lengths in front of Amigo Volo to lift his lifetime stats to eight wins from 25 starts and earnings of $296,713. Moon Bridge was third. Lovedbythemasses, the 8-5 public choice, broke just after the start and finished seventh in the eight-horse field.

“He’s not the handiest or the quickest on the turns,” said Miller of Beads. “But at the head of the stretch I talked to my horse and he took off.”

Beads returned $11.00 to win as the third choice in the wagering.

ROCKING THE CLOCK: Nicholas Beach, trained by Jenn Bongiorno and driver by her brother Joe, equaled the fastest mile of the year in harness racing of 1:47.2 when he ripped out of the pocket as the 8-5 second choice to gun down leader American History, the even-money favorite who had established the mark last week. This Is The Plan, who won the Borgata Series Final at Yonkers in his last start, shrugged off a 33-day layoff to miss a fast-charging nose in the $30,000 Open-Preferred Handicap for pacers. American History held third.

Lyons Sentinel exploded home after going a third-over trip to take the $37,500 first leg of the Kissin In The Sand Series for Open Mares at odds of 20-1 for trainer Jim King Jr. and driver Tim Tetrick. Her final time of 1:48.2 was a lifetime best and equaled Soho Burning Love A’s time for fastest female pacer of 2021, established seven days ago.

A LITTLE MORE: Gingras and Tetrick both drove three winners on the card. Gingras finished the weekend with a half-dozen victories. … All-source handle totaled $3,730,993, the seventh consecutive Saturday to see betting bust the $3.5-million barrier. … Live racing resumes Friday at 6:20 p.m.

Hennessey continues to roll at Tioga with six more wins.

John Horne for Tioga Downs.

Wally Hennessey continues to rack up the wins at Tioga Downs.  He drove six winners including the featured $9,000 Fillies and Mares Open Pace with Landry Seelster on Saturday (May 22).

In the feature Landry Seelster ($3.10) worked her way to the front and led to the first quarter in :26.1.  She slowed the pace with a :29.3 second quarter hitting the half in :55.4.  Persistent Bettor (Jody Jamieson) made a first-over move to try to get to Landry Seelster.  Landry Seelster shook her off and led to three-quarters in 1:22.2.

Talk Show Chica (Corey Braden) popped the pocket and gave her best effort but had to settle for second as Landry Seelster coasted to a lifetime best of 1:51.3.  Persistent Bettor held on for third.

Landry Seelster is a 4-year-old mare by Mach Three.  She is owned by Kim Lezanchuk and trained by Jim McDonald.  It was her fourth win of the season.  She now owns 10 career wins.

Hennessey got his other wins with Red Dirt Rocknroll ($5.50), Beyond The View ($6.80), Elm Grove Maddy ($6.90), Adios Muchachos ($4.10), and Idealthecards ($5.00)

Tioga Downs returns to Live racing on Sunday (May 23) with a 13-race card starting at 1:00 p.m.

For more information go to www.tiogadowns.com.

Credit List wins Open Trot at Vernon.

John Horne for Vernon Downs

Credit List (Justin Hackabone) goes from last to first to capture the $7,000 Open Trot at Vernon Downs on Saturday (May22).

Spoiler Alert (Truman Gale) went straight to the front and led to the first quarter in :28.2.  He used a :29.0 second quarter to hit the half in :57.2.  Beyond Kronos (Dylan Huckabone-Miller) was first to make a move and challenged Spoiler Alert all the way around the final turn.  Spoiler Alert maintained a short lead to three-quarters in 1:25.3.

Credit List ($3.90) found himself last at the half and last at three-quarters.  Beyond Kronos wrestled the lead away at the top of the stretch.  Credit List just came flying down the stretch and passed them all to win in 1:55.2.  Beyond Kronos had to settle for second.  The always tough American JJ (Michael Miller) finished third.

Credit List is a 6-year-old gelding by Credit Winner.  He is owned by Jonathan Applebaum and trained by Huckabone.  It was his eighth win this season.  He now has 19 career victories.

Joe Nassimos was trainer-driver for two wins on the card.  John MacDonald and Leon Bailey each had driving doubles with Bruce Lauer getting a training double.  76-year-old Miriam Toland found the winner’s circle once again with her faithful horse Fleetwood Hall.

Vernon Downs returns to live racing on Friday (May 28) with a post time of 6:10 p.m.

GO GO GEORGE WINS GLADA TROT AGAIN AT NORTHFIELD PARK

by John Manzi, for the Great Lakes Amateur Drivers Association

Northfield, Ohio--- There's an old adage which states 'when you're hot, you're hot' and that is just exactly what Go go George is after having won the $8400 GLADA trot again tonight at Northfield Park. With Larry Ferrari at the controls they stopped the clock at 1:56.1 for the veteran trotter's fourth win in his last six starts.

Understandably sent off as the favorite from post two in the nine-horse field, Ferrari wasted little time sending George to the lead from the two-hole when the starter said “go” and they reached the first stanza in :28.3. When Floyd Rhodes moved Back Door Man off the pylons to challenge for the lead the two trotters raced side-by-side past the half in :59 and they were noses apart when they trotted by the three quarters in 1:28. While that was happening Vernon Beachy enjoyed a covered two-hole trip with Big Bad Caviar and when Back Door Man's stride shortened Beachy and his trotter  ranged up and moved alongside Go Go George. But Farrari's trotter was up to the challenge and when they headed for paydirt Big Bad Caviar struggled and a game Go Go George trotted on to a 1-1/4 length triumph. Big Bad Caviar finished second, 2-1/2 lengths ahead of third place finisher Back Door Man.

Go Go George, a 7-year-old altered son of Neely Dunn, is owned by Kiesha Ferrari and trained by his driver. He returned a $4.40 win mutuel.

Stratosphere, Mugshots Bro Share Spotlight At Buffalo

by Brian J. Mazurek, for Buffalo Raceway

HAMBURG, N.Y. --- Stratosphere ($6.10) was shot into orbit by driver Drew Monti right before the opening panel and that bold brush proved to be the difference as the 6-year-old gelding collected the victory in Buffalo Raceway's $11,000 Class AA-Open Handicapped Pace on Saturday night (May 19).

Sitting third behind Santana Beach and Thor De Vie approaching the opening marker, Stratosphere wasn't pleased with the action on the front end so he took control of matters, firing to the lead.

With splits of :28.4, :57.2 and 1:26.0, Stratosphere was ready to face the challenges that awaited him in the home stretch. Daylight Rush (David McNeight III) gave it a good try but couldn't get by Stratosphere who finished a half length in front in 1:54.1. Santana Beach (Kevin Cummings) and Under Paid (Ray Fisher Jr.) finished in a dead heat for third.

Stratosphere is owned by driver Drew Monti and conditioned by Darrin Monti. It was the third victory in eight appearances this season for Stratosphere (Mach Three-Northern Jade), now a winner of $20,010 on the campaign and $133,375 in his career.

Mugshot Bro (Shawn McDonough) toiled in the back of the pack in the co-featured $10,000 Class A-Open Handicapped Trot but uncorked a wicked stretch drive to beat the favored Southern Palms by a half length in 1:58.4 over the fast track. Tartufo Lindy (Cummings) was third.

Southern Palms (Jim Morrill Jr.) dictated the tempo of the race with fractions of :29.2, :59.1 and 1:28.4. Things looked under control turning for home for Southern Palms but Mugshots Bro was widest of all in the lane and there was no stopping him as he hit the finish line going away.

Co-owned by Herman Niedhammer and Herman Niedhammer Jr., Mugshots Bro (Jailhouse Jesse-Photo Emmy) is trained by McDonough. It was his second decision in four appearances this year for the 8-year-old gelding, a winner of $13,698 on the campaign and $231,719 lifetime.

Seafarer (Fisher Jr.) got into contention with a big move down the backstretch then finished the job with a solid kick in the lane to capture the first of two $9,600 Class A paces in 1:55.0 over Sir Pugsley (Travis Henry). Silver Beast (James McNeight Jr.) finished in third.

Owned by Tanah Merah Farms LLC and trained by Ryan Swift, it was the fourth victory in 12 starts this season for the 5-year-old gelded Seafarer (Captaintreacherous-Baez). The win increased his 2021 earnings to $16,960 and $152,404 lifetime.

In the second division, Allstar Energy (Ron Beback Jr.) watched The Lunch Pail (Monti) do all the dirty work then pounced in the passing lane to take the surprising $20.20 win in 1:56.0. Major Authority (Wade Tomaszewski) rallied late to take second while The Lunch Pail got the third place position.

Trained by Beback Jr. and co-owned by Sandra Beback and James Kustra, it was the third triumph in 12 outings for Allstar Energy (Four Starzzz Shark-Flickering Light). The victory upped his 2021 bankroll to $18,257 and $259,478 in his career..

Racing will continue on Wednesday evening at 5 p.m. with a 12-race program scheduled.

SVANSTEDT SCORES AGAIN IN SIRE STAKES AT BIG M

By Dave Little, Meadowlands Media Relations

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – On a night that saw four $25,000 divisions of New Jersey Sire Stakes action for 3-year-olds on the trot, an Ake Svanstedt trainee was the most impressive winner for a second consecutive week on Friday at The Meadowlands.

Just seven days after his Lindysmusclemania scored in 1:51.4 to mark himself as a Hambletonian player, Svanstedt’s Mon Amour made himself a part of the Hambo conversation by taking down 3-5 favorite Cuatro De Julio in powerhouse fashion in 1:52 in one of two splits for colts and geldings.

“I got lucky,” said winning driver Yannick Gingras of how he got behind the son of Muscle Hill-Mind Meld. “Ake had another horse in the race [Red Redemption]. What a nice horse Mon Amour is.”

Red Redemption led at the quarter but Mon Amour took over soon thereafter as Cuatro De Julio – so impressive a week ago winning on the front end – raced in fifth. Mon Amour reached the half in :56.2 as ‘Cuatro’ made his way toward the leader from first-over.

Cuatro De Julio got within a length of the eventual winner at three-quarters (1:24.3) before taking a bad step in mid-stretch to lose any chance of winning. Mon Amour then drew clear to win by 2¾ lengths. Cuatro De Julio righted the ship late to get second and had to survive a brief inquiry from the judges. Kildare King was third.

“I was able to control the race,” said Gingras, “and late in the mile I stepped on the gas and there was plenty left. I didn’t really go all-in on him and he [still] had some more.”

As the 8-5 second choice, Mon Amour returned $5.20 to win.

Gingras’ sweep of the colt and gelding events started earlier on the card when the 41-year-old pilot guided 7-5 favorite Locatelli (Muscle Hill-Girlie Tough) to victory lane in 1:52.4 for trainer Nancy Takter.

Tim Tetrick gave Material Girl a superb steer to pull off an upset at 12-1 for trainer Lucas Wallin in the first of two divisions for fillies in 1:53.1.

The Muscle Hill-Lilu Hanover product was kept close to the action by Tetrick from the start and gunned down 2-1 second choice Hot As Hill nearing the wire to win by a neck.

“I just wanted to try and get her up close,” said Tetrick. “She put in a great effort. I had plenty of trot. The two favorites got worked up and I got a dream trip.”

Even-money public choice Eazy Pass did not have an easy time of it, wilting after working hard to make the top at the half to finish seventh.

The other division for fillies was taken by 5-2 second choice Beltassima (Trixton-Beltane Hanover) in 1:53.2 for trainer Tony Alagna and driver Andrew McCarthy by a head over 2-1 favorite Awesome Trix.

NON-BETTORS: The second leg of the New Jersey Sire Stakes for 3-year-old pacers were conducted as non-betting events during the evening with a pair of two-horse races that went for $20,000.

In the dash for fillies that took place before the betting card, the Eric Foster-trained Neverendingproject (Great Vintage-Project Terror) made a move to the lead on the far turn and kept Anna Jeans at bay by a half-length in 2:02 for driver Russell Foster.

In a race conducted after the fourth wagering event, Fika Time won the colts and geldings split in 1:54.2 for trainer Chase Vandervort and Tetrick. The son of Sunfire Blue Chip-Raiders Favorite made a big move to grab the top turning for home and hit the wire 5½ lengths in front of Neyreit.

A LITTLE MORE: Driver Doug McNair must have been feeling good after hearing his home track, Woodbine Mohawk Park, will be back racing soon, as he registered three winners on the card. … Gingras matched McNair by also scoring a driving triple. … All-source wagering totaled $3,073,035, the 15th consecutive program to surpass the $3-million mark. … Racing resumes Saturday at 6:20 p.m.

J-Mac wins five including feature at Vernon.

 John Horne for Vernon Downs.

John MacDonald drove five winners on the night including the $6,000 featured fillies and mares’ pace with Peggy J at Vernon Downs on Friday (May 21).

Peggy J ($4.60) wins stretch drive with Jericho Diva to win feature.

Lady Dudette (Kyle Cummings) jumped out to the early lead and led to the first quarter in :27.2.  Jericho Diva (Leon Bailey) was first to make a move and led to the half in :56.3.  Peggy J moved her way up to second as the two mares battled all the way around the final turn.  Jericho Diva still had a slight lead as they hit three-quarters in 1:25.2.

As they made the turn for home Peggy J came at Jericho Diva with all she had.  Jericho Diva tried to hold firm but Peggy J was too much for her and won in a lifetime best of 1:53.2.  Jericho Diva held for second money as Sheer Talent (Justin Huckabone finished third.

Peggy J is a 4-year-old mare by Quality Western.  She is owned by Paula Sarcone and trained by Jeff Sorenson.  It was her fifth win of 2021.  She now has 11 career victories.

MacDonald got his other wins with Anchor So Reel ($6.50), Culinary Artist ($7.80), Notwithoutafight ($3.30), and Cash N Chrome ($12.40).

Everyone at Vernon had a heavy heart as we lost Vernon Downs legend Howard Okusko Sr.  He was known as the nicest guy at the track.  As a driver he won nearly 600 races.  As a trainer he won 800 races.  As a person there was no one better.  Rest in peace Howard Okusko Sr., Vernon Downs will never be the same without you!

Vernon Downs returns to live racing on Saturday (May 22) with a 10-race card starting at 6:10 p.m.

BIG M THE PLACE FOR MARVELOUS MONEY, MILES AND McCARTHY

Meadowlands Media Relations

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – Things kept rolling along at The Meadowlands last weekend (May 14-15) as the handle topped the magic $7-million mark, Andy McCarthy stayed hot by driving five winners and Saturday’s average winning time was under 1:50.

Total betting was $3,485,163 on Friday and $4,088,468 on Saturday to run The Big M’s number of $7-million weekends to seven this year. For all of 2020, that number was three.

As for $4-million race cards, last Saturday marked the fifth time during 2021 that lofty barrier was busted. That plateau was reached three times last year.

While things are good at The Big M, track Chief Operating Officer and General Manager Jason Settlemoir is still thinking of Ontario, where things remain at a standstill with no racing.

“Although The Meadowlands has done very well this year,” said Settlemoir, “our thoughts and prayers are with the horsemen and women – and their cherished horses – in Canada. This has been an extraordinary hardship for our two- and four-legged friends North of the Border, and we hope that Canadian horse racing can restart as soon as possible.”

As for McCarthy, he was named The Big M’s Driver of the Week a week ago after winning four races on Friday (May 7) and Saturday (May 8) and likely will win the award for a second consecutive week after tallying five victories last weekend, which included a four-winner night – his third over the last four programs – on Saturday (May 15).

Of McCarthy’s four-pack, two stood out. American History recorded the fastest mile in harness racing this year when he stopped the clock in 1:47.2 in a high-end conditioned pace while his other big win came with Ruthless Hanover, who got roughed up through a :53.4 half before scoring in 1:48 in one of two divisions of the Graduate Series.

Poseidon Seelster (with George Brennan driving) scored in the other division of the Graduate in 1:47.4 and Soho Burning Love A (Tim Tetrick) took the Preferred for pacing fillies and mares in 1:48.2 to become the first female sub-1:49 performer of the year to help establish the 2021 mark for fastest average winning time for an entire race card at 1:49.2.

THREE FOR THE MONEY: McCarthy has recorded 14 wins thus far in May, good for earnings of $206,097, but two other Big M drivers have earned even more.

Dexter Dunn, who is the dash leader at the track with 79 victories, has banked $272,343 thus far this month while Tim Tetrick’s drives have earned $208,592.

SMALL BETS, BIG GETS: Once again, the proof was in the payouts over the weekend that Meadowlands’ players can hit big while betting little.

Last weekend saw nine payouts of over $1,000 on wagers that offer a low 15 percent takeout.

Friday’s big returns came in the 20-cent Pick-5 ($3,101), Early 50-cent Pick-4 ($1,303), 20-cent Survivor Pick-7 ($13,368), Late 50-cent Pick-4 ($1,624) and 20-cent Pick-6 ($8,761).

Saturday saw large payoffs in the Early Pick-4 ($2,133), Pick-7 ($11,070), Pick-6 ($2,367) and 10-cent Hi-5/Pentafecta ($4,396).

STAKES ARE ON: On Friday night, the featured action at The Big M will be four $25,000 divisions of the New Jersey Sire Stakes for 3-year-olds on the trot, two divisions for fillies and two for colts and geldings.

Saturday will have a pair of $50,000 divisions of the first leg of the Graduate Series for 4-year-olds on the trot, leg one of the $37,500 Kissin In The Sand for Open Mare pacers as well as a $30,000 Open/Preferred on the pace, featuring American History.

Little Joke All Business At Buffalo Raceway

by Brian J. Mazurek, for Buffalo Raceway

HAMBURG, N.Y. --- Little Joke ($7,50) was all business on Wednesday night (May 19) as she waited patiently then sprung into action in the stretch to post the victory in Buffalo Raceway's $10,000 Filly and Mare Class A-Open Handicapped Pace in a seasonal best 1:56.3.

After a four length romp last week in the Class A-B pace in 1:57.3, Little Joke (Drew Monti) was prepared to return to tougher but familiar territory, battling the top level distaffer pacers.

Robintheatm (Jim Morrll Jr.) immediately shot to the lead off the starting gate and registered fractions of :29.1, :57.4 and 1:27.0 over the fast track. Those were reasonable enough splits but turning for home, Robintheatm felt the walls closing in on her..

With a cavalry line setting up behind the leader, the pocket sitting Little Joke led the charge down the passing lane and was quickest of all, taking the length victory. Xenia's Chip (David McNeight III) rallied late for second while Greenhilldebatable (Shawn McDonough) placed third.

Co-owned by Vogel & Wags Nags, Team Rice Racing and Adelphia Bloodstock, it was the fourth win in 10 attempts this season for Little Joke (Bettor's Delight-Town Joke). The 9-year-old mare, trained by Maria Rice, has now earned $22,520 in 2021 and $340,093 lifetime.

Kevin Cummings led the way for the drivers with three victories while McDonough and Jim McNeight Jr. doubled. Lee Dahn and Angelo Nappo each conditioned a pair of winners.

Racing will continue on Saturday evening at 6 p.m. with a 12-race card scheduled.
