Filly Does The Vogue At Cal Expo

La
Madawna De Rosa will attempt to make her mark in one of the most contentious
divisions on the Cal Expo grounds when she suits up in Friday night’s (April
27) Sire Stakes clash for the 3-year-old pacing fillies.
The
homebred daughter of Little Steven and Keystone Rosedale, who carries the
banner of Cindy Tupper, with Bob Johnson doing the conditioning, has captured
two of her six appearances while seeking her initial trophy this weekend.

La
Madawna De Rosa was the even-money choice in the first big-money clash of the
season for this group, but fell well back early and found herself with too much
to do in the lane. A repeat of either of
her previous two miles will certainly put her right in the thick of things on
Friday evening.
“She’s
the second foal out of the mare, who we call Rosie,” Cindy related. “Since she was a late foal on June 8, we
didn’t race her as a 2-year-old. When I
first approached Bob about training her, he told me he had her doubts she would
make it because she’s was so much smaller than many of the others in his barn.
“She’s
actually surprised him and his second trainer Robert Bell. She came home in :27.3 the night she won in
1:57 earlier this month and it was only her fifth start. Needless to say, I am very proud of her.”
Tupper
explained that the name La Madawna De Rosa comes from the way she was acting
right after she came into the world.
“She
was foaled at UC Davis and we got to see her within 15 minutes of her birth. She was vocal right from the get-go. When we walked up and peered over the wall,
she had just got up and finished nursing, saw us and gave a greeting.
“At
that point she came wobbly-legged over to us, stuck her nose up and whinnied
again as if to say ‘Hi, how are you?’
She then did a little dance around the stall a couple of times and has
been in your face and a show off ever since.
Thus the Madonna name.”

Sire Stakes Headline Friday Cal Expo Program
A
pair of $12,000 California Sire Stakes for the 3-year-old fillies are on tap at
Cal Expo on Friday night (April 27), with Twenty One Guns and Diva Las Vegas
getting a rematch in the pacing event while Silverlode eyes an encore in the
trotting contest.
The
first big-money clash of the season for the sophomore pacing fillies two weeks
ago found Twentyone Guns picking up her initial stakes trophy by a head over
Diva Las Vegas, who was an added-money victress last year and lost a tough one
in that most recent gathering for this group.
Twentyone
Guns is a homebred daughter of Hi Ho Silverheels and the Distinguished Baron
mare Annie Get Your Gun who races for Wayne and Rod Knittel, takes her lessons
from Bob Johnson, and once again has Scott Cisco giving directions. She will be one of three Johnson trainees in
the field.
The
bay miss posted a romping maiden victory on April 6 and parlayed that score
into her first big-money tally. Cisco
played the role of stalker with his charge, engaged Diva Las Vegas at
mid-tretch and prevailed by a head with the 1:57.2 clocking resulting in a new
lifetime mark.
Diva
Las Vegas is another daughter of Hi Ho Silverheels who is co-owned by trainer
Denise Maier and Wayne Knittel and has Steve Wiseman in the sulky. She picked up her stakes win back in November
and lost a heartbreaker to Twentyone Guns in the first stakes clash of
2012. Completing the field are Drawing
Dead, Little Anna Mae, Pismo Beach and La Madawna De Rosa.
Live
racing resumes at Cal Expo on Friday (April 27) & Saturday (April 28) at
6:00 p.m. (PST). On
every live card, Cal Expo offers free parking & free admission after 4:30
p.m. On Friday, Cal Expo offers Happy Hour
from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on which Beer; Well Drinks & Wine are offered at $4
each, while a Burger
with fries is offered at $5.
Cal
Expo currently offers a reduced 15 percent takeout rate on all Pick 4’s. Additionally, all Late Pick 4’s now come with
an increased $20,000-guaranteed gross pool.
Also, the Friday Late Pick 4 will offer a 0% takeout on all winning
wagers made on track or at Twinspires.com, while the Saturday Late Pick 4 will
be broadcast on TVG.
