Calx1 - Albion, One And Only Do Battle On Saturday At Cal Expo

Albion, who made a break into the stretch at most recent asking and had his winning streak snapped; and One And Only, who took advantage to post a facile victory, get a rematch in Saturday night’s (April 21) $4,500 Winners-over Pace at Cal Expo.

Albion is a 6-year-old son of The Panderosa who is owned by Dan Tullio, James Mascola and trainer Matias Ruiz, and will once again have Luke Plano at the controls.  He comes into this assignment with seven wins from his 14 starts on the year, is right at the $100,000 earnings plateau and sports a 1:52.2 mark.

The Ruiz trainee earned that career standard in his April 7 score, which capped a hat trick that began on March 24 and 31 with romping victories that saw him making what proved to be the winning move at the quarter.  He made every pole a winning one the evening he established that 1:52.2 mark, holding safe by a neck over One And Only after having a clear lead at mid-stretch.

Sent off at 30 cents on the dollar for his last outing, Albion was last in the compact cast at the midway point, was making his move into the lane when he made an uncharacteristic break to lose all chance.  It will be interesting to see if he can rebound this weekend.

One And Only is fresh from establishing his new career standard of 1:53.2 in that aforementioned April 14 affair.  The 4-year-old Bettor’s Delight offspring carries the banner of Richard Morita and David Yamada with Liberio Pacheco the conditioner and Jim Lackey in the sulky.

One And Only was winning for the third time on the year with Scott Cisco handling the lines.  After the miscue by Albion, he had little trouble handling Stanza and prevailed by eight and three-quarter lengths.  In the previous try, he sat the pocket behind pace-setting Albion and just missed that night after coming a flashy :26.1 final quarter with Lackey at the helm.

Rounding out the field are Stanza, who has Steve Wiseman guiding from the cozy one-hole; Haggin Oaks for James Kennedy; Glad To Be Back with Rick Wojcio; and Little A Little, to be handled by Lemoyne Svendsen.  A 14-race card is on tap with the headliner set as the second on the evening.

Live racing resumes at Cal Expo on Friday (April 20) & Saturday (April 21) at 6:00 p.m. (PST).  On every live card, Cal Expo offers free parking & free admission after 4:30 p.m.  On Friday, Cal Expo offers Happy Hour from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on which Beer; Well Drinks & Wine are offered at $4 each, while a Burger with fries is offered at $5.
