The Hambletonian Society and Walsh Products Announce Renewal of Most Valuable Trainer Award

October 22, 2012 – The Breeders Crown and Walsh Products are pleased to announce the renewal of the Most Valuable Trainer ( MVT ) Award to be presented at the conclusion of the Breeders Crown races next Saturday, Oct. 27 from Woodbine Racetrack.

Last year’s winner, Ron Burke, was named The Breeders Crown MVT when he accumulated 33 points with 10 horses entered and three horses hitting the board including last year’s freshman sensation Sweet Lou who won the Two-Year-Old Colt division.  Both Burke and Sweet Lou have returned to defend their titles.

The award will consist of a $2,000 Walsh Gift Certificate good for any of the quality harness equipment that carries the Walsh name.  Additionally, the winning trainer will receive $500 of Walsh’s latest innovations including their water resistant harness pads, ultimate two tone buxtons, and revolutionary Neoprene waffle girths.  The Most Valuable Trainer will also receive a commemorative Walsh/Breeders Crown plaque.

Walsh’s President, Paul Treiber, sees the renewal of this award as a reflection of the continued dedication to trainers who prepare these talented athletes for an event like Breeders Crown. “The Hambletonian Society and The Breeders Crown represent the best of the best in our sport.  The Walsh team works daily to produce the best equipment and helping trainers achieve their goal of getting the most out of these equine athletes.  We also are dedicated to making trainers’ jobs easier with the highest quality, reliability, and durability to the world of harness racing.”

The award will go to the trainer that accumulates the highest number of points based on a matrix that takes into account:

  • The number of starters in each of the Breeders Crown races (one point per starter)
  • Placings in the Breeders Crown races (10 points for first, five points for second, three points for third)
  • 15 subjective award points
