Major Leaguer wins Vernon Downs feature.

Major Leaguer (Jimmy Whittemore) captures the $5,600 featured pace at Vernon Downs on Saturday (July 18).

Major Leaguer ($4.30) flew out of the gate and went right to the front.  He hit the first quarter first in :26.4.  Bettor's Edge (Jennifer Lappe) followed in the pocket as Major Leaguer hit the half in :55.3.  Golden Gun (Justin Huckabone) was the first to make a move going first-up from third.  He could not gain any traction and dropped back.  Major Leaguer was first to three-quarters in 1:22.4.

As they reached the stretch Bettor's Edge came out of the pocket but couldn't get close as Major Leaguer won in a lifetime best of 1:50.1.  Bettor's Edge settled for second with Drunkonaplane (Ben McNeil) coming up to get third.

Major Leaguer is a 6-year-old gelding by Art Major.  He is owned by Whittemore and trained by Marissa Chandbourne.  It was his third straight win this season.  He now has 29 career victories.

Whittemore, John MacDonald, and Mitch Cushing all had driving doubles on the night.

Vernon Downs returns to live racing on Thursday (July 23) featuring two division of the New York Sire Stakes for 3-year-old pacing fillies.  The 15-race card starts at 4 p.m.
