Jenny Lake wins Vernon Downs feature.

Jenny Lake (Leon Bailey) captures the $5,200 featured trot at Vernon Downs on Thursday (July 30).

Jenny Lake ($3.60) and Spoiler Alert (Brett Crawford) both charged out of the gate together going side side all the way to the first turn.  Spoiler Alert cleared and led to the first quarter in :26.3.  He would be first to the half in :55.1.  Jenny Lake continued to follow in the pocket  and as they went around the final turn she made her move.  Spoiler Alert held a short lead to three-quarters in 1:24.4.

As they made the turn for home Jenny Lake took control.  Gettin Serious (Roman Lopez) came flying down the stretch and became the major danger.  Jenny Lake had plenty in the tank and won easily in 1:54.4.  Gettin Serious had to settle for second.  Winning Princess (Jennifer Lappe) came up to get third.

Jenny Lake is a 4-year-old mare by RC Royalty.  Trained by Paul Minckler for owners Ed Naniotka Jr. and Carol Namiotka.  It was her fourth win this season.  She now owns 12 career victories.

Jimmy Whittemore drove three winners on the card to give him 24 on the season.  That leaves him one behind leading driver Howard Parker (25).  Leon Bailey had a driving double giving him 18 wins and third place on the list.  John MacDonald follows next with 12 tallies.

Miriam Toland at age 75 does it again.

The veteran used a late charge from Fleetwood Hall (Deweycheatumnhowe) to squeak  by in between horses to win a three-way photo on the last race of the day.  To see her you would think she was 40 years old.  She always keeps herself in tip top shape.  You can't help but smile to see her in the winner's circle!

Vernon Downs returns to live racing with a 12-race card on Saturday (August 1) starting at 3 p.m.

NYSS heads to Tioga on Saturday.

Tioga Downs welcomes two divisions of the New York Sire Stakes (NYSS) for 2-year-old colts & geldings on Saturday (August 1).  Both divisions will race for a purse of $53,100.

The Mark Harder trained Southwind Petyr (Tyler Buter) is the 2-1 morning line favorite in the first division.  The colt by American Ideal-Southwind Paris will make his career debut after an impressive qualifier in 1:55.2 at Harrah's Philadelphia.

His main rivals will be Major Bean (Jason Bartlett) and Carrythetorchman (Marcus Miller).   Major Bean (Art Major-Lismorebella) is trained by Blake Macintosh.  The colt has two seconds in three starts including a second place finish in the NYSS at Saratoga.  Carrythetorchman (American Ideal-Kattimon) has a win in three career starts.  Trained by Erv Miller, he also had a second place finish at Saratoga.

Unbeaten American Courage (Matt Kakaley) should be the big favorite in the second division.  American Courage (American Ideal-Nota Fool Bluechip) is four for four including a win in the MGM Springfield Stakes final at Yonkers.  The colt trained by Travis Alexander also has a win in the NYSS at Saratoga.

The Mark Harder trained King James Express (Jason Bartlett) should be the major rival.  The gelding by Art Major-More Diamonds won a leg of the NYSS at Saratoga.  He is one for two lifetime.

The 15-race card starts at 3 p.m.

PICK-5 AND PICK-6 CARRYOVERS SURE TO CREATE BIG M BUZZ

Meadowlands Media Relations

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – At the conclusion of last Saturday’s (July 25) Meadowlands program, the Big M faithful were no doubt already looking forward to the next race card since both the 20-cent Pick-5 and 20-cent Pick-6 failed to produce any winning tickets, creating huge possibilities for Friday (July 31) when racing resumes at 7:15 p.m.

A total of $270,000 in guaranteed money will be up for grabs and you won’t want to be late, as last week’s Pick-5 carryover of $52,665 has led to Big M management offering up a $150,000 instant guaranteed pool for this week’s Pick-5, which gets underway in the first race.

An example of why carryovers are so precious to the player: If Friday’s Pick-5 takes in $150,000 in “new money”, for a final pool of $200,000, the player's edge is 20 percent.

The mathematics: When 15 percent of $150,000 is taken out, you are left with $127,500. Add in the $52,665 carryover, the total pool is $180,165, thus, a “surplus” of $30,165.

Fans of the 20-cent Pick-6 are also in for a Fabulous Friday, as that pool has a $30,000 instant guarantee, the result of last week’s $13,524 carryover. The wager begins in Race 4.

Horseplayers can get an awful lot of bang for their buck, as they can play the same amount of combinations they used to play for 50-cent minimums for 60 percent less or play 2½ times more combinations for the same amount of green.

A typical 50-cent base bet might use a 1x4x4x4 spread for a total of $32. Betting with a 20-cent base, one could spend the same $32 but have a ticket with a 1x2x4x4x5 spread.

The Big M’s signature bet, the 50-cent Pick-4, will offer up its usual double dose on the Friday and Saturday programs. The Early Pick-4 kicks off in Race 6 and has a guaranteed pool of $50,000, while the Late Pick-4 (Race 10) offers a $40,000 promise.

The Late Pick-4 has been the hot ticket of late, with three straight pools exceeding $100,000 in action.

The 13th race 20-cent Jackpot Super High-Five has a carryover that continues to bloat. That pot will start out at $102,563 for Friday’s finale.

THIS WEEKEND: Friday night at The Meadowlands features big action at the windows, and on the track as well, as there will be two eliminations for the Jim Doherty Memorial for 2-year-old fillies on the trot, while the male freshmen trotters will go at it in one Peter Haughton Memorial elim.

Saturday night’s card is packed with star power. There will be two eliminations for the 95th edition of the $1,000,000 Hambletonian for 3-year-olds on the trot, where Stanley Dancer Memorial winners Back Of The Neck and Ready For Moni are favored in their respective splits.

In addition, Meadowlands Pace winner Tall Dark Stranger makes his return to the races in a division of the Tompkins Geers.

NEXT WEEKEND: Friday (August 7) night’s races will begin at the usual 7:15 p.m., but on Saturday (August 8), Hambletonian Day, a huge 16-race program gets underway at noon.

In addition to The Hambo, the $600,000 Hambletonian Oaks, $285,000 Cane Pace, $100,000 Shady Daisy, $230,000 Sam McKee, $183,500 Lady Liberty, $280,000 John Cashman, $186,000 John Steele, $324,000 Peter Haughton and $310,000 Jim Doherty will also be on the card.

COMING TO THE TRACK? This Friday and Saturday, Big M visitors can make reservations and dine on the West Deck for $29.95. For reservations, contact Marianne Rotella at 201-842-5059 or mrotella@playmeadowlands.com.

Fans are welcome to come to the track who prefer not to dine, but with an outdoor social-gathering limit of 500 people, as long as they wear their masks and adhere to other safety precautions, or they can watch the action from the backyard, where there will be additional dining options.

BACK OF THE NECK, READY FOR MONI TOP HAMBLETONIAN ELIMS

By Dave Little, Meadowlands Media Relations

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – With each having recorded a sharp score in their respective divisions of the Stanley Dancer Memorial, Back Of The Neck and Ready For Moni have been installed as the morning-line favorites in their respective Hambletonian eliminations, which take place Saturday (August 1) night at The Meadowlands. The Hambo Final is August 8.

In the first of two $50,000 elims, Back Of The Neck is listed at 2-1 from post one for driver Scott Zeron and trainer Ake Svanstedt. After missing a nose in his seasonal debut on June 27 to Sorella – one of The Hambletonian Oaks favorites – the son of Ready Cash-Big Barb has reeled off two straight wins from off the pace in impressive fashion, scoring in the July 11 Reynolds in a lifetime-best 1:52 before his Dancer win on July 18, also in 1:52.

“No, he is not one dimensional,” said Zeron after being asked if his horses’ best game is coming from behind. “His best effort was on the front end in his first start. To have come home in :26.1 and get picked off at the last second, that was a great effort.

“I avoided the front end going forward because I wanted to teach him to do other things. [Having drawn post 1] Gives me options. I definitely don’t have one trip in mind. I avoided the front in his last two on purpose, but we will play it by ear. I’m happy with the post position.”

Ready For Moni will start at 5-2 on the big board from post 8 in the second elim as Nancy Takter and Yannick Gingras look to become the first trainer-driver team to sweep The Meadowlands Pace and The Hambletonian in the same year.

The son of Ready Cash-Nothing But Moni went a perfect cover trip in his only outing of 2020 when he won his Dancer split in a lifetime-best 1:51.4 after kicking home in :27.1.

So, what about the outside post position? “I’m a little indifferent about it,” said Takter. “On paper, it looks like we are in the easier of the two eliminations. I think we are in good shape. I think the eight is a good spot.”

Takter is not concerned about Ready For Moni having only had one outing this season.

“It’s just the way his schedule played out,” said Takter. “I would have preferred one or two more starts but all of our horses have a good foundation. I think it’s a myth that these horses need a lot of races. They go so fast. I think [having too few starts] is better than having too many.”

For the complete post-position draw of both Hambletonian eliminations, go to http://ustrottingnews.com/hambletonian-eliminations-set/

FABULOUS FILLIES: Attempting to become the next filly to win the Hambletonian (Atlanta was the last in 2018) are Ramona Hill (5-1 in the first elim) and Sister Sledge (3-1 in elim two).

OAKS A SINGULAR EVENT: The $600,000 Hambletonian Oaks saw 12 horses enter, meaning that event for 3-year-old fillies on the trot will not need eliminations and will be one dash for the cash on Saturday, August 8.

To view the complete list of horses entered, go to http://ustrottingnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/ENTERED-2020-Hambo.pdf

POST DRAWS LIVE: The post-position draws for both The Hambletonian and Hambletonian Oaks will take place during Saturday night’s program at The Meadowlands and will be broadcast on the track’s in-house simulcast feed live.
