YONKERS, NY, Thursday, March 8, 2018—After
a very clumsy start, Foiled Again wound up a Yonkers Raceway fifth Thursday
night (March 8th), his fifth attempt at a 100th career
win.
Sent off as the slight 1.35-1 favorite
from the pole in the $20,000, eighth-race pace, Foiled Again (Yannick Gingras)
threw in steps behind the gate.
He settled fourth in a race that became a
three-speed (Badix Hanover/Soho Wallstreet A/Twin B Speedo) number in a brisk
(1:53.3) mile during a brisk evening. Badix Hanover also sent off at
$1.35-to-$1 odds (though second choice), won by a couple of lengths.
Foiled Again did try it first-up, but never advanced, beaten 5½ lengths. The
$1,000 final pay envelope increased his sport’s-best career bankroll to $7,573,178. It was the 14-year-old
gelding’s 309th career purse start.
“He made a
slight bobble behind the gate,” Gingras said. “I’ve revved him up more than
that leaving before and he’s never done that.
“I mean, even
without (the break), I think he was going to get away third (behind Badix
Hanover and Soho Wallstreet A), so it didn’t really cost us that much as far as
position.
“Otherwise,
he seemed the same as he usually does,” Gingras said. “They went a pretty good
mile, and all we can do it try again.”
Unrelated, Thursday night’s Pick 5 was quite well received. With $7,516.89 left in
the couch cushions from Tuesday evening (March 6th), $32,771 of new coin was added. After takeout,
a pool of $32,095—give or take a few cents—was there for the taking.
The formful winning combination of 3/6/4/3/4 returned $77 for every correct
50-cent wager.
