Tgdn5/8 - Captaintreacherous, Scandalous Hanover, and Jimmy Marohn Jr. Post Big Days at Tioga

Tioga Downs held one of its banner days of the 2013 racing season on Monday, September 2nd with the $360,211 Cane Pace, $122,212 Shady Daisy, and the final round of the Drivers’ Championship.

When the curtain fell on the afternoon, hometown favorite, and Tioga Downs’ leading driver, Jimmy Marohn Jr, had captured the $25,000 Drivers’ Championship with a dramatic final race victory aboard Diamond Star. Heading into the final leg of the competition, Marohn was sitting in third place with thirty three points, six behind Tim Tetrick with thirty nine and two behind Brian Sears with thirty seven. The final leg of the competition was Marohn’s race to choose the horse he drove and he was the lone driver throughout the competition to win with a horse that he chosen. Marohn, joined in the winner’s circle by his father, Jim Marohn Sr. following the victory was ecstatic and when asked where it ranked in his racing career was very clear “Right at the top, this is second to none” said Marohn. Brian Sears finished second in the competition with forty points, while Tim Tetrick finished third ending with thirty nine points.

In the $360,212 Cane Pace final, Captaintreacherous was hustled off the wings of the gate by Tim Tetrick and kept Varadero Hanover (Yannick Gingras) parked out through an opening quarter in 26.2. From there, Tetrick and Captaintreacherous were able to get their way by the half in 54 as Varadero Hanover began to back through field. That allowed the other part of the entry mate, Wake Up Peter (Ron Pierce) to move alongside Captaintreacherous by three quarters in 1:21.2 and keep Vegas Vacation (Brian Sears) pinned in on the pylons. At the top of the stretch, the Alagna entry entered sitting first and second, with Word Power (Jody Jamieson) flying three wide off of cover. Down the stretch, Vegas Vacation was unable to find racing room on the pylons and Captaintreacherous dug in to hold off a late closing Word Power who finished second in 1:49.2. Captaintreacherous’ entry mate Wake Up Peter finished third, while Vegas Vacation had to settle for fourth.

In the $122,212 Shady Daisy, Scandalous Hanover had come into the race on a three race win streak since joining the Casie Coleman stable in late July. David Miller did the driving on Scandalous Hanover from position number three and sat in fifth as Nikki Beach (Ron Pierce), Ms Caila J Fra (Simon Allard), and Shebestingin (Brian Sears) put up torturous fractions of 27 and 53.2. Down the backside and headed towards three quarters, Nikki Beach continued to park out Ms Caila J Fra and Shebestingin as David Miller sent Scandalous Hanover three wide by three quarters in 1:21.2 as Ms Caila J Fra was finally clearing to the front. In the lane, Ms Caila J Fra was relentless and wouldn’t go away as Miller urged Scandalous Hanover to the wire to win by a neck in 1:51. Casie Coleman trains the 3-year old daughter of Dragon Again – Subtle Charm who remains unbeaten and stays a perfect four for four in the Coleman stable.
