YR - MM'S LUCKY BOY, ALL SPIRIT WIN FRIDAY NIGHT 44G CO-FEATURES

BY FRANK DRUCKER, Publicity Director, Empire City @ Yonkers Raceway

YONKERS, NY, Friday, August 10, 2012--Yonkers Raceway's usual Friday night pair of $44,000 Open Handicaps--for trotters and distaff pacers, respectively--were won by odds-on choice MM'S Lucky Boy (Brent Holland, $3) and All Spirit (Jim Marohn Jr., $10).

MM's Lucky Boy made it three wins in his last four Friday trotting features, doing the damage in 1:55.3. Leaving from post position No. 5--in one notch after an inside defection--he stepped past pole-sitting Speed Bomb (Jason Bartlett) before a 29-second opening quarter-mile.

After a :58.2 intermission, E L Rock (George Brennan),  last week's 25-1 upsetter, tried it first-up from fifth. However, he was out of ammo soon after a 1:26.4 three-quarters as "Lucky Boy" had a length advantage turning for home. He withstood Speed Bomb by three-quarters of a length in 1:55.3,

Mystical Starlight (Mark MacDonald), Perfect Picture (Cat Manzi) and E L Rock settled for the small change.

For MM's Lucky Boy, a 5-year-old Malabar Millennium gelding trained by Erv Miller for himself, along with David and John Prushnok, it was his seventh win in 19 seasonal starts. The exacta paid $9.10, the triple returned $39.80 and the superfecta paid $145.50.

The veteran statebred All Spirit did it the hard way, going first-up and over 11-10 favorite P Note Blue Chip (Brennan), then holding Naughtytiltheend (Holland) at bay by a neck. Third went to a third-over Breakheart Pass (Bartlett), with P Note and Billmar Scooter (Eric Goodell) grabbing the remainder.

It was "P Note" who worked around longshot Shanghai Lil (MacDonald) early, taking the lead just past a  :27.1 opening quarter-mile. From there, a seemingly-soft-enough 29-second next portion (:56.1 half) before All Spirit--leaving from post position No. 3--moved from fourth.

All Spirit was getting serious in and out of the 1:24.4 three-quarters, though P Note Blue Chip held a half-length lead into the lane. All Spirit eventually disposed of the leader, then kept a second-over Naughtytiltheend away in 1:52.4.

For All Spirit, a 6-year-old daughter of Bettor's Delight owned by Larry Lanpher and trained by Judy Lanpher, she returned $10.80 (third choice) for her seventh win in 16 seasonal starts. The exacta paid $47.20, with the triple returning $279.50.

The Raceway continues its normal five-night-per-week live schedule, with first post every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:10 PM. Evening simulcasting accompanies all live programs, with afternoon simulcasting available around the NYRA schedule.
