YONKERS ANNOUNCES DRAW SCHEDULE, PICK 5 GUARANTEE

BY FRANK DRUCKER, Publicity Director, Empire City @ Yonkers Raceway

YONKERS, NY, Thursday, May 30, 2019—Just because Yonkers Raceway is dark doesn’t mean Yonkers Raceway is quiet.
Ahead of the return of live racing Friday night, June 7th,  the Raceway is offering these items of interest.
The first draw—Monday, June 3rd—is actually a double draw (Friday/Saturday, June 7th/8th), the entry box closing at 9 AM sharp.
A Friday/Saturday condition sheet is available at
There are also morning draws for the cards of Monday, June 10th (box closes Tuesday, June 4th) and Tuesday, June 11th (box closes Thursday, June 6th), before the regular late afternoon draw schedule returns Friday, June 7th (card of Thursday, June 13th).
When racing resumes, there’s also a Pick 5 guarantee going into effect. As part of the U.S. Trotting Association’s Strategic Wagering Program and with the approval of the New York State Gaming Commission, a $10,000 guarantee is available every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evening, the first night being Monday, June 10th.
Should the sequence go unhit, the current ‘instant guarantee’ remains leading to the next racing program.
The Pick 5 is a 50-cent base wager comprising either races 6 through 10 (10-race card) or 7 through 11 (more than 10-race card). It has no consolation payoff, hence the shot at an ‘instant guarantee”.
More information shall be sent after the June 10th card is drawn.
First post remains at 6:50 PM.

TONY “SHIFTY” CIUFFETELLI, JR. SCORES MAIDEN WIN IN BILLINGS TROT AT MONTICELLO

by John Manzi for the Billings Series

Monticello, NY—It was only Tony “Shifty” Ciuffetelli, Jr's fourth professional drive but he handled himself like a seasoned pro when he took advantage of a covered trip to the top of the stretch and then rallied his trotter down the passing lane to score a 2:00.4 triumph with Revrac Habour in the Billings Trot at Monticello Raceway on Thursday afternoon, May 30.

For a youngster who drove his first pari-mutuel winner, outwardly he remained quiet but surely under his calm exterior one would have to believe he was jubilant.

“When I got away in the two-hole I figured I'd probably get a good trip and I did, “Ciuffetelli admitted. “But my horse was steady on the left line as we headed to the half. Being an old veteran, I guess he wanted to make a move off the pylons, but when Bob Hechkoff (with Noble Warrawee) moved alongside the leader (Connie Keeper) he let go of the left line and as we passed the three quarters I had a good hold on him and I was looking for racing room.”

Young Ciuffetelli found what he was looking for when the leaders reached the top of the stretch. He angled the 8-year-old son of Donato Hanover to the passing and the veteran trotter did the rest and trotted by both the pace-setter, Connie Keeper, and her challenger, Noble Warrawee, to score a one-length victory in 2:00.4.

Ciuffetelli is the son of veteran Billings participant “Tough Tony” Ciuffetelli.

Owned by Homestyle Racing and trained by Joseph Ciuffetelli,  Revrac Hanover paid $18.40.  It was the veteran trotter's second seasonal triumph and the 28th of his career which increased his lifetime earnings to over $240,000.

Next Billings action is slated for Saturday, June 1 at the Meadows in western Pennsylvania.

Stayed perfect in two starts this year after a dominant 4-length score at Philadelphia Sunday as the 1-20 favorite. Johansson: “He was very good. We still haven’t pulled his plugs this year. Right now, I couldn’t be any more pleased.” Crunch will take the week off and then go in the North America Cup.

Giant mile in the Rooney Final Saturday resulted in a 6-length score as the 4-5 public choice. Bettor’s Delight product is now 3-for-3 this year. Ryder: “I was thrilled. I tried not to think about the fact that we had to leave from the outside but I was OK with the pocket trip. Dexter (Dunn) has done real well, I give him no instruction at all. Bettor’s Wish will go next in the North America Cup Eliminations in two weeks.”

Took last week off after drawing away from his foes by almost 5 lengths in an eye-popping 1:49.3 over the off-going at Pocono two Sundays ago. Brown: “We skipped the last sire stake because we didn’t want to ship. He qualified well Wednesday at Hoosier in 1:52.3. If we do well enough in the other races, I am not going to worry about the fact that we may not have enough points for the Pennsylvania Sire Stakes Final. The NA Cup is next.”

Will facing horses this inferior prepare him for the road ahead? McDermott: “I was really happy with him last Friday. I told Danny (Dube) to race him for half a mile. I expect him to go faster this Friday in the NJSS Final, but the clock is not that important to me. He is plenty fit.”

PICK-4s ARE WILD AT BIG M

Meadowlands Media Relations
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – It’s a proven fact that Meadowlands fans love to try and pick four winners on one ticket in an effort to make a score, and the pools for the ever-popular Big M 50-Cent Pick-4 – as well as those for the new 20-Cent Can-Am Pick-4 – back that up.
The consistency of the Big M Pick-4 has been remarkable. Of the 42 race cards contested at the mile oval in 2019, 21 times (50 percent) the pool has exceeded $100,000.
The current six-figure streak stands at three, showing pools of $104,786, $100,408 and $111,105, respectively, for the most recent programs. The highest pool of the year was achieved on March 2, when $134,614 was pushed through the windows.
“Our big fields and competitive racing create multi-leg wager pools that out fans want to be a part of,” said Big M Chief Operating Officer and General Manager Jason Settlemoir. “We have also found that the new Can-Am Pick-4 is popular with our players as well. The cooperation we get from everyone at Woodbine Mohawk Park as well as the hard work that’s done at both tracks has much to do with the bet’s success.”
With a 20-Cent minimum bet and the challenge of picking winners at harness racing’s top two venues – the Big M and Woodbine Mohawk Park – betting in the Can-Am Pick-4 has been steady, due in part that with the low minimum, players can ‘spread’ their tickets further, which creates more winners.
The Can-Am Pick-4 is only 10 weeks into its existence, but betting has been solid, with an average pool of $56,423. Payouts are smaller due to the decreased minimum, so players should be aware that a CAP4 that pays $200, would come back $500 had it had a 50-Cent minimum. The CAP4 is comprised of, in order, Mohawk’s 10th race, Meadowlands’ 10th, Mohawk’s 11th and the Big M’s 11th.
Free program pages (along with expert selections) are available on both the Meadowlands’ 50-Cent Pick-4 and the 20-Cent Can-Am Pick-4 by going to www.playmeadowlands.com or www.ustrotting.com. Both wagers have a low 15 percent takeout.
For those who like to play the 20-Cent Jackpot Super High-Five, a carryover of $97,120 awaits for the fifth race on Friday night.
HEAD TO CANADA TO GRADUATE: Simulcast fans will want to check out the action at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Saturday (June 1), as Leg 2 of the Graduate Series for some of the best 4-year-old pacers and trotters in training will be the featured event.
On the trotting side, 2018 Hambletonian champion Atlanta will make an appearance, while on the pace, Courtly Choice is the marquee name.
Leg 3 of the series is June 9 at Tioga Downs before the fourth and final leg is contested at the Big M on June 28. The Graduate Series Finals will be on July 6 at the Meadowlands.
PUT ON YOUR RUNNING SHOES: Beer, food, music and fun will be on the menu for the Big M’s “Corporate Fun Run 5K” tonight (Thursday, May 30).
They’ll be a DJ, a photographer, a race announcer and awards for fastest teams and individuals.

Event times:
·         5-6:30 p.m., Team packet pickup, race night registration, company gathering
·         6:30-7:30 p.m., 5K run/walk
·         7:30-9:30 p.m., Post-race party and awards.
SEE THE STARS UP CLOSE: Two New Jersey Sire Stakes standouts will be on the Friday (May 31) card at the Big M.
In a non-betting event at 6:10 p.m., Hurrikane Emperor, No. 4 in the current “Road to the Crawford Farms Meadowlands Pace” weekly Top 10 poll, goes after the 3-year-old colt and gelding pace final, while, in the 3-year-old colt and gelding trot final, Hambletonian hopeful Greenshoe is the 9-5 morning-line choice in the second betting race on the program.
First race post time this Friday and Saturday is 7:15 p.m.
GET YOUR MOTOR RUNNIN’: On Saturday (June 1), get ready for an exciting exotic charity car show at the Meadowlands from 6-10 p.m., presented by Luxe Autos and the enCourage Kids Foundation.
There will be Lamborghinis, Ferraris, Bentleys, Porsches and more on display, featuring the world’s most exclusive supercars, exotics, sports cars and rare pieces. Over 15 brands will line the track.

Miss Mary Mach Doesn't Look Back At Buffalo

by Brian J. Mazurek, for Buffalo Raceway

HAMBURG, N.Y. --- Miss Mary Mach kept her brief unbeaten streak alive at Buffalo Raceway on Wednesday evening (May 29) by taking the featured $11,000 Class A Open pace for the filly and mares.

Making her debut at the Hamburg half-mile oval on May 22 with a half-length victory in 1:56.1, Miss Mary Mach (Jim Morrill Jr.) stepped up in class this week and had no issues in registering a 1-1/2 length decision over Sportsmuffler in 1:56.1.

Scoring from the four post, Miss Mary Mach ($5.30) was able to storm to the lead and set soft fractions of :29.1 and :59.3 to the half.

Morrill Jr. then got Miss Mary Mach into overdrive the final two panels, using a :56.3 last half to nail down the victory. Sportsmuffler (David McNeight III) took the second place position while Sarah Cola (Ray Fisher Jr.) was third.

Co-owned by the Burke Racing Stable LLC and Weaver Bruscemi LLC, it was the sixth win in 16 outings for the 4-year-old mare Miss Mary Mach (Mach Three-Mary Artman). The triumph moved her seasonal earnings to $38,432 and $73,165 lifetime.

Morrill Jr. completed the evening with a triple while trainer James Clouser Jr. collected a double.

Racing will continue on Friday evening at 5 p.m. with a nine-race program set. There's a $1026 carryover in the Pick-5 which begins in the second race.

Gaming Bill Will Create Thousands of New Agribusiness Jobs

Former Governor Edgar Supports Horse Racing Jobs Bill

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Harness Horsemen’s Association (IHHA) is urging lawmakers during these last few days of session to pass gaming legislation that includes horse racing. Proposed legislation would reinvigorate Illinois’ horse racing industry and lead to the creation of thousands of new agriculture jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars in sorely needed revenue for the state.

Former Illinois Governor and racehorse owner Jim Edgar is confident that if gaming expansion includes horse racing, thousands of new agriculture jobs will be created across the state. “This gaming bill is a jobs bill for the horse racing industry,” said Edgar. “One racehorse directly employs three people like grooms, trainers, and drivers and indirectly employs many others like hay and grain farmers, veterinarians, blacksmiths, equipment dealers and more. The ripple effect of horse racing on the agriculture industry is tremendous.”

In addition to allowing existing racetracks to add slot machines, proposed gaming legislation would permit the construction of a new Standardbred racetrack in the metropolitan Chicago area.

“All of the racing has moved east to states that have invested in horse racing,” said IHHA President Marty Engel. “Agriculture is number one in Illinois and horse racing fits hand in glove with agriculture. There is no reason Illinois can’t have a robust horse racing industry if gaming legislation is passed into law.”

Standardbred horse breeding numbers are at an all time low in Illinois with only around 140 foals bred in 2018. At the height of horse racing in Illinois, more than 2,000 Standardbred horses were foaled in Illinois. Many Illinois horsemen have moved their breeding farms and training facilities to states like Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania which allow casino at racetracks. In fact, Illinois is only one of a very few horse racing state in the country that does not allow casino gaming at racetracks. In other states, money from those casino games is used to boost purse winnings for horsemen. Over the last few years, horsemen have fled the Land of Lincoln for greener pastures.

Members of the IHHA are optimistic that horse racing in Illinois would swiftly rebound if racetracks were allowed slot machines.

“Ohio had virtually no professional horse racing industry ten years ago,” said IHHA board member Angie Coleman. “Since allowing casino gaming at racetracks, Ohio has seen a horse racing boom. New tracks have been built and thousands of agribusiness jobs have been created to support the industry there.”

Rita Williams, an IHHA Board Director and longtime horse breeder in Illinois says that it will take a couple of years to get the breeding numbers back up but there will be tremendous enthusiasm for Illinois-bred horses. “There are lots of incentives to race Illinois-bred horses in our state,” said Williams. “Existing laws and rules benefit Illinois-bred horses and if the purse money increases, you can bet that trainers, drivers, grooms, and breeders will want to get in on the action.”

In addition to a new racetrack and casino gaming at existing racetracks, this proposed legislation will also guarantee live race dates, a fair percentage of the profits from gaming at tracks to horsemen’s purses and the elimination of recapture. A certain number of live races will be earmarked for Illinois-bred horses, further supporting Illinois agriculture.
