“The reason for the early draw is because of Christmas falls
on Tuesday next week,” Warner explained.
According to Warner there is good news and there is bad news
concerning the Au Revoir, the final race of their careers for 14 year olds.
The good news concerns the possible entrants and it is that
Tattler’s Jet, the grand ole veteran of 120 lifetime wins has a sore foot
and will most probably not be in the race.
“I feel bad about this,” Tattler’s Jet’s trainer Gene Miller
told the publicity department yesterday. “We raced him last week and now
he seems to have an abscess in his foot. I tried everything but the ole fella
is still lame. I’ll give it one more chance and try a cow manure poultice but
I’m not too confident that it will do the trick. We were certainly aiming for
the Au Revoir but it doesn’t look good for us now.”
The bad news is that the race could not get enough entries
to fill.
“We just got a call from Ken Sumner who owns 14 year
old Whitlock N who says he’s interested in racing in our Au
Revoir,” Warner said. “Still even if he does enter we figure there will
only be four or five horses in the race and two may be trotters, since
we’ve received the OK from the (NY State)Racing Board for them to compete
in this specialty race. We’ll go for a $5000 purse and if there are four or
five all are guaranteed a piece of the purse. Remember the box closes at 9 am
Friday morning December 21.”
