Local amateur drivers have banded together to help the Food
Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties by staging a two race benefit at Freehold
Raceway. All proceeds from the two week event will go to the devastated
charity. Each driver is donating $100 per start plus all of their driver's
commissions to the cash starved organization.
Race Secretary Karen Fagliarone and Freehold Raceway
Management were instrumental in getting this charitable venture put together.
Mrs. Fagliarone stated "there are already so many people who go hungry
every day and combined with the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, we knew the
Food Bank would be stretched way past its capabilities. So when the amateur
drivers came to us with this idea, Management and I felt anything we could do
to help should try to be done."
The first race was held this past Friday(Dec. 7) with
Bob Hechkoff winning the event in grand style. He got his horse Tremendous Hit
in gear just before the three quarter pole. Coming three wide and charging up
from the back of the pack he beat Tony Verruso and Fox Valley Rival who were
weaving through traffic in the stretch. Bob Krivelin and Jeter Marvel who saw
allot of race track having been hung the entire mile held on for a very game
third.
The second of the two races will be held this
Saturday (Dec. 15) which has been deemed Racing for Recovery Day at the New
Jersey oval. Aside of the money being donated by the amateur drivers, Freehold
Raceway will donate all the proceeds of the day to the Food Bank. Also people
and organizations have come forward to sponsor the races that day in hopes of
adding significantly to the monies being donated.
Anyone wishing to sponsor a race should call Karen
Fagliarone in the race office at Freehold. The number is (800) 836-0462. Anyone wishing to donate directly to the
Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties directly can do so by calling (732)
