No Recess is a Double Threat

By Allan Schott for RUS MidAtlantic

Fans of racing under saddle (RUS) have taken notice of ‘new’ rider Sietske Dijkhof and her horse No Recess which have raced on the RUS MidAtlantic and RUS New York circuits this past season as the team went a perfect three for three this year including a sparkling 1:59 mark at Meadowlands Racing and Gaming.  What also drew the attention of fans was the two victories No Recess had ‘in sulky’ during the period the horse was racing under saddle, earning two of the three sulky victories for the year as of the time this article was written.  We talked to Sietske and her boyfriend, trainer Kyle Spagnola about No Recess and the improvement seen in No Recess while doing double duty.

No Recess (Sietske Dijkhof) qualifying at
Saratoga Casino and Hotel.  Kyle Spagnola
photo.
First, Dijkhof is no new rider.  Born and raised in the Netherlands, Sietske has been around standardbreds from birth as her parents used to be trainers.  When her parents left the game, she continued working in the industry.  Loving riding, the connection with the horse, as well as the speed involved in monté (the European term for RUS) racing she became a rider back home.  So, while it may appear a new rider has appeared in the RUS universe, it is really a reconnection of old friends.

How did Dijkhof and Spagnola make the decision to use No Recess?  After Spagnola Racing LLC acquired the trotter, it was noticed the nine-year-old altered son of Rich Boy-Riann Photo (SJ’s Photo) had raced back in 2016 under saddle, learning his lessons from rider Michelle Crawford and finishing third in his only purse start at Ocean Downs behind RUS favorites Mr Protab and Highway Marcus.  After a couple of rides, it was decided to give No Recess another go under saddle, especially since he is not a horse inclined to make breaks.  After two RUS qualifiers between pari-mutuel starts, it was time to make their first purse start at Batavia Downs Gaming where No Recess won by a length.  Subsequent victories at Saratoga (four lengths) and the Meadowlands (ten lengths) proved their faith in the horse well deserved.

“Yes, I do believe it helps him mentally”, says Dijkhof when asked if racing No Recess under saddle has helped his sulky career,” he seems to enjoy the races under saddle and doing something else makes the nine-year-old gelding happier”.  As for training the horse to race under saddle, surprisingly the trotter doesn’t train for the races.  Being a veteran, No Recess knows the game. Racing every week, one way of another, keeps the horse sharp. Skipping the Rosecroft race due to the distance the horse would have to travel, Sietske wished there were more RUS races available either in a circuit or as overnight events.  “I wish there were more races right now, so he could do both and keep his mind ‘fresh’.

There has been some discussion as to whether RUS should be expanded to allow pacers to race under saddle.  As of now, there has been no movement on the contentious issue but as far as this rider is concerned, she takes the attitude of ‘bring it on’, the more races under saddle the better.

Of course, racing in non-betting races is one thing, but what about having RUS on the wagering card.  We asked Kyle Spagnola whether he would race horses in his stable in RUS events if there was wagering and he has no problem with entering horses in under saddle races, but he indicated it would be hard to persuade owners to enter horses in non-wagering events at the current purse levels.  “Owners want to make money and win races.  At the level [purses] it is right now, people are not going to invest in horses for RUS when they can race for much more money in the bike”, Spagnola said.  Getting trainers to enter horses in RUS with the current purse structure is difficult as there are more profitable races to compete in.  But if purses increase he feels trainers will support RUS.  No doubt the caliber of horses entering would be higher.

So, what is more difficult, racing in the bike or under a rider?  Kyle’s take? “I think it’s easier if they are gaited well enough to do it [RUS] because they don’t have to pull the bike and they don’t have to ride as wide”.   Since racing under saddle appears to be easier, participating in RUS is a great way to extend a horse’s career, possibly helping with future horse shortages.

Yes, groups like RUS MidAtlantic have challenges to move on to the next level to get wagering on RUS races and promote interest in standardbreds and harness racing.  Perhaps it is best said by Spagnola. “Overseas there are a lot of racing under saddle events and it seems like people are excited about it”.

2 Provisional Drivers score their maiden wins in back to back races

At Monticello Raceway on Monday afternoon October 29, an anomaly of sorts took place, 2 (P) Provisional Drivers both notched their maiden driving wins in back to back races.  In race 3, 22-year-old Christopher Doherty got his first win in only his 3rd P drive, aboard Sheer Action who won by 4 lengths in 2:00.4 and paid $6.20 to win for trainer Jim Doherty Jr.

In the next race, 25-year-old Philip Lacorte III driving for just the 9th time in his young career, scored his maiden win with a 5 length, wire to wire score with J Danae in 2:02.1 and paid $4.90, the 7-year-old Nuclear Legacy mare is also trained by Lacorte III.

OLDFORD RULES BILLINGS MIDWEST REGION WITH ANOTHER VICTORY AT NORTHFIELD PARK

by John Manzi, for the Billings Series
Northfield, Ohio—Winning Billings trots in the midwest region is getting to be a habit for Steve “You're Never Too” Oldford. The talented reinsman from Michigan, who is also the vice president of the CKG Billings Harness Driving Series, scored an easy wire-to-wire triumph with Stirling Boudica in 1:58.3 Sunday night at Northfield Park. It was Oldford's second consecutive victory there.
Sent off as the 4-5 favorite from the five-hole Oldford did what should be done when one has the best horse in the race. He sent the 8-year-old daughter of Malabar Man immediately to the lead in a :28.1 first quarter and once in command, and with no challengers, Oldford was able to tap the brakes as his mare led Tipontab ,and driver Cubbie Van Wagoner, to the mid-way point in :58.1.
First to move was “Marvelous Marvin” Raber when he took aim at the leader with Buckeye Patty when the field straightened up he backside. But they never did get alongside the leaders, Around the final turn Stirling Boudica was in front with Tipontab still following her and at this point Oldford's mare appeared strong-- and she was-- and rambled home a two-length winner with Tipontab second best.
Meanwhile, Buckeye Patty stalled, which allowed Better Call Saul and “Michelle the Belle” Ruvola to rally and both horses were inseparable for the show dough when they reached the finish line.
Racing his stock at Northfield Park has been fruitful for Oldford. He won a Billings trot for the third time is as many weeks and he has been victorious in five of his last six trips to post. Currently with 12 wins and a .328 UDR, it has vaulted him into the running for National Amateur Driver of the Year, an honor Oldford won a few years ago.
The winner, Stirling Boudica, is owned by Oldford Racing and trained by Kody Massey. She paid $3.40. And for Oldford it marked his 142nd lifetime driving victory..

NO STOPPING PAPPY GO GO IN BIG M FEATURE

By Dave Little, Meadowlands Media Relations
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Pappy Go Go showed his win a week ago against weaker foes was the perfect prep for the Saturday night conditioned trotting feature at the Meadowlands, as he scored for fun in the $16,000 event in 1:54.
The Andrew Harris trainee was firing fast at the outset, hitting the quarter in :27.3, two lengths in front of the pocket-sitting My Cherry Pie. Unpressured, the 4-year-old gelded son of Tad The Stud-Paging Willy, hit the half in :56 and three-quarters in 1:24.4, where he extended his lead to almost 3 lengths.
Pappy Go Go kept on rolling through the stretch, hitting the wire 5½ lengths in front of My Cherry Pie over a track rated ‘sloppy’. Simply Volo finished third. New Jersey Viking, the 7-5 favorite, popped out of the three hole at the five-eighths but never threatened and finished fourth.
As the 9-5 second choice, Pappy Go Go returned $5.80 to his backers in winning for the 24th time in 46 lifetime starts for owner Michael Goldberg Racing LLC.
A LITTLE MORE: Trainer Bob Lounsbury had three winners on the card as did drivers Mike Merton and Dexter Dunn. … Driver Steve Smith lit up the tote board in the Friday finale with a 16-1 shot. On Saturday, he did it again, scoring at 16-1 with Bills Fella in the eighth race, and topped a $2 Trifecta that returned $53,700. … All-source handle on the 12-race card totaled $1,592,218. … Racing resumes Friday at 7:15 p.m.

INSEPARABLE IN SATURDAY NIGHT 44G OPEN HANDICAP PACE

BY FRANK DRUCKER, Publicity Director, Empire City @ Yonkers Raceway

YONKERS, NY, Saturday, October 27, 2018—It was an old-fashioned heater Saturday night (Oct. 27th), with Great Vintage (Mark MacDonald, $5.60) and I’m Some Graduate (Pat Berry, $12.20) dividing Yonkers Raceway’s co-featured $44,000 Open Handicap Pace.
The tandem swallowed up Mach it So (Joe Bongiorno) late in the lane, Great Vintage easing out from the pocket and I’m Some Graduate altering course and closing inside to match strides at the line in a ‘sloppy’ 1:52.3.
Mach it So was third, beaten a head, with Bit of a Legend N (Jordan Stratton) a two-move fourth and tepid 5-2 favorite Military Master A (Jason Bartlett) fifth. It was just a length-and-a-half between the five payees.
Saturday night’s co-featured Open Handicap Trot was won by DW’s NY Yank (Bongiorno, $9), who pocketed past 7-10 choice Gruden (Bongiorno) by a neck in 1:57. The Last Chapter (MacDonald) was third, with Kinetic King (Jim Marohn Jr.) and Boffin (Stratton) settling for the minors.
A reminder that the Raceway offers six programs next week, going Monday, Tuesday, Thursday (final one of season), Friday and Saturday evenings (first post 6:50 PM) as well as Sunday, Nov. 4th (post time TBA)

Thunder, a John Butenschoen-trained trotter, sat in the two-hole early before emerging from the rail with three-eighths of a mile to go. With Yonkers kingpin Jason Bartlett at the controls, the son of Conway Hall-CR Oh Suzanna made steady progress around the far turn to get within a head of leader Reign Of Honor before going on to a dominant 5-length score. MONICA BANCA WINS NAADA TROT AT YONKERS RACEWAY

by John Manzi for NAADA

Yonkers, NY---After finishing third in a Billings trot this afternoon at Monticello Raceway Monica Banca then traveled 90 miles to compete in a NAADA trot at Yonkers Raceway which proved fruitful for the talented trans- planted Norwegian when she guided Master of Excuses to a gate-to-wire 1:59.3 triumph over the Hilltop oval.

In a field reduced to just five, Banca who started from the coveted pole position, sent her charge to the lead and had command in the :28.4 first quarter. Once clearly on top Banca tapped the brakes and eased her trotter past the halfway point in :59.3.

Bob Davis, who also competed in the Billings at Monticello earlier in the day, was the first to challenge Banca and her charge when he moved Gianni off the pylons before the three quarters but Master Of Excuses wasn't having any part of it as the venerable trotter put together a :29.2 third quarter and opened up a three -length lead when the field rounded the final turn.

As they headed for paydirt, Uriel and Annie Stoebe who were second with a covered trip, began to fade as the trailers moved forward. When the field straightened in the lane however, Master of Excuses was still three -lengths in front lead as Gianni and Davis were applying the pressure but they ran out of racetrack and had to settle for second money when Master Of Excuses tripped the final timer in 1:59.3 Third place went to Baltimor AS, driven by Bobby Ciavardini.

Banca co-owns the winner with Rick Dane. Although it was only Banca's third winner this year, her eight seconds and four thirds in 23 starts boosted her seasonal UDR to .387. And it was the 25th winning drive for Ms Banca since she joined the amateur movement in 2013..

Monticello, NY-- To say that amateur driver “Yankee Joe” Lee is on a roll would be gross understatement.

After winning the Billings Trot with Soul Train in 2:01.2 today (Thurs. Oct 25) at Monticello Raceway, Lee, the assistant locker room manager for the New York Yankees, now has three consecutive driving victories and has won four of his last five starts.

Sent off as the even-money favorite in the six-horse field uncharacteristically Lee took his trotter of the gate and settled in fifth along the pylons as Brandos Muscle Man and Monica “the Norwegian Flash ” Banca led the field by the first stanza in :29.4.

“I took a chance taking Soul Train back at the start because in the past he never wanted to pass horses when we trailed but today he was definitely different,” Lee explained. “He really surprised me when I pulled him going to the half and he easily trotted around Brandos Muscle Man and took command as we headed into the clubhouse turn.”

By the time Lee reached the three quarters Soul Train had five lengths on the field and at that point the only thing in doubt was the margin of victory.

The lead over Brandos Muscle Man was opened to eight lengths as Lee and Soul Train headed for paydirt. Down the stretch Lee was looking for challengers but none came and they coasted home an easy 8-1/2 length winner in 2:01.2.

However, in the deep stretch “Lady Jennifer” Lappe rallied Celebrity Blue Chip from fifth at the top of the lane to finish second, a length in front of Brandos Muscle Man.

Soul Train is co-owned by Lee, Blindswitch Racing and the Good Friends Stable and trained by Jose Godinez. The 7-year-old altered son of Trainforthefuture scored scored his sixth seasonal victory and returned a $4.00 win mutuel..

For Lee, who was last years National Amateur Driver of the Year, it was his 11th driving victory this season and 48th of his career.

GEORGE BRENNAN DOESN’T LOOK A DAY OVER 10,000

FRANK DRUCKER, Publicity Director, Empire City @ Yonkers Raceway

YONKERS, NY, Wednesday, October 24, 2018—About seven weeks ago, an evening or so after Brian Sears won the 10,000th race of his career, there was George Brennan, sitting next to him inside Yonkers Raceway’s drivers’ room.

“We’re the old guys in the room,” Sears said.

Well, ‘Old Guy’ Brennan joined Sears in the five-figure club, mimicking Sears and winning his 10,000th career race this past Friday night (Oct. 19th) at the pair’s home away from home, Yonkers Raceway.

When diminutive Down Under Our Zak Whitby A went the distance in that evening’s second race, chauffeur Brennan became the 16th North American driver to reach that number.

A rare race off the night before allowed the 51-year-old Brennan a chance to reflect on what was then a milestone-in-waiting.

“It’s a good number, nothing I was aiming for,” Brennan said, “but I understand it’s significant.

“I don’t know if my approach is any different than when I was 30 or 40. I still love what I do, show up every night, keep myself in good shape and know the horses.”

Of course, getting dibs for Ron Burke and Scott DiDomenico, among other leading trainers, doesn’t hurt.

“The horsepower is the key,” Brennan said, adding, “The game has changed. Speed stays longer, the horses—pacers and trotters—have a lot more go-go. You don’t always have to be forwardly-placed, but it usually doesn’t hurt.”

If there has been one concession Brennan had made, it’s to his schedule.

“I’m here (Yonkers) about 98 percent of the time,” he said. “There’s no more traveling and getting home at three in the morning. Sometimes, I go to Freehold, the Meadowlands or Philly, but always local.

            “It keeps me fresh.”

The Brennan resume recital is too meandering for this missive—the man’s no one-hit wonder--so he was asked to choose a few that stood out.

            In no particular order…

Glidemaster (2006 Yonkers Trot) – “It was unfortunate for John (Campbell). The colt won the Hambletonian and Kentucky Futurity, then John was injured and (trainer) Blair (Burgess) asked me to drive. The race was late that season (Nov. 25th), and it was a very cold night here. He won first-up in (1):55 [actually 1:55.4] to win the Triple Crown, so to be a part of that was pretty special.”

(author’s aside…Brennan had driven Glidemaster in his previous start, finishing second in the Breeders Crown at Woodbine)

Artist’s View (2007 Breeders Crown 3-Year-Colt/Gelding Pace, Meadowlands) – “Without a doubt, one of my favorite races. He was out every step from the 10-hole and won (at 42-1). His trainer, Buzzy Sholty, is one of my best friends, so that was great.”

Holborn Hanover  (2006 U-S Pacing Championship, Meadowlands) – “I put a world record [1:46.4] on him that day. Old bike, record lasted for years. Loved him.”

(another author’s aside…Holborn Hanover’s effort remains the standard for aged pacing geldings. He was five at the time)

…and then there was THAT day, Aug. 6, 2011, at the Meadowlands. In a span of 35 minutes, Brennan polished off the $750,000 Hambletonian Oaks (Bold and Fresh, 1:53.1) and $1.5 million Hambletonian (Broad Bahn, 1:53) at odds of 24-1 and 6-1, respectively.

“Who thinks that’s going to happen?,” he said. “It was a hell of a day.”

During the conversation, around a mundane 10-race overnight card, Brennan bemoaned one aspect of the game that he says has changed.

“I miss not having the classy 10- and 11-year-olds out there competing they way they used to,” he said. This night featured ‘just’ three 10-year-olds, although several of the races were age-restricted.

It didn’t take very long to connect the dots between that musing and one Foiled Again

“What’s he’s done has been incredible,” Brennan—who won thrice with him—said of the sport’s richest-ever equine. “It was a honor to get to drive him.”

Alright, George Brennan, let’s put the finishing touches on ‘What 10,000 Wins Mean to Me’.

“I think what I’m really proud of is that when I came down here (New York metropolitan area) for good in 1994, I didn’t have 1,000 wins,” Brennan said. “So, to win 9,000 or so races driving against top-notch competition, that’s something to me.”

Brennan, a native of Monticello, NY, won his first race--behind Rob Ron Romper--at his hometown track as a high school junior back in 1982. His career purse earnings exceed $171 million, ranking seventh all-time, according to the U-S Trotting Association.

Asked when he thought he ‘became good,’ Brennan offered that “I was going to drive horses for a living regardless, but when I had early success at Monticello (inserting credit to stepfather Joe Ricco Jr.), it helped.

“I’m 51, but I’m still learning, so if younger drivers are picking things up from me, I’m picking things up from them, too.”

BRIAN SEARS…KING OF THE LONGSHOTS?

BY FRANK DRUCKER, Publicity Director, Empire City @ Yonkers Raceway

YONKERS, NY, Monday, October 22, 2018—Turns out Brian Sears’ 30-1 upset with Cruzado Dela Noche in the million-dollar Yonkers International Trot was puny parimutuel potatoes.
Monday night (Oct. 22nd), Sears and---we kid you not—82-1 A Oliveinmymartini became Yonkers Raceway’s largest win mutuel of the season, to the tune of $167.50 for ever correct couple of bucks.
This was far for a ‘shortest distance between two points’ number. From post position No. 8 in the $16,000, third-race pace, the lass missed the memo, spotting her rivals about a half-dozen lengths at the start.
A Oliveinmymartini did catch the field, racing fourth along the pylons before slipping out and widest in the final turn. She defeated 11-1 Successful Outlook (Jordan Stratton) by a half-length, with 17-1 Bullvillekarla (Dan Dube) third and 6-1 Fine Art (Brent Holland) fourth.
Making her first start for owner Samuel Abdoo and trainer Amber Buter, the 3-year-old daughter of Three Olives was patrolling the Ohio fair circuit before winning at Dayton 18 nights ago. The 1:55.2 in her local debut was a life-best performance and led a $1,433 exacta, $10,899 triple (base $2 payout, $1 ticket worth $5,449.50) and $129,551 (base $2 payout, 10-cent ticket worth $6,477.55).
A Oliveinmymartini won for the third time in 10 seasonal starts.
Now, about that incorrect indefinite article in her name…

GREGG KEIDEL WINS BILLINGS TROT AT NORTHFIELD PARK ON SUNDAY

by John Manzi, for the Billings Series

Northfield, Ohio—On Sunday evening, Oct. 21, ten trotters went to post in a mid-region Billings trot at Northfield Park and after studying the races betting patterns only three horses had a legitimate shot at victory and two were sent away by the betting public at odds of less than 2-1 with the third at 9-2. and when the judges posted the official sign Nashville Holiday and driver Gregg “Fast Greggy” Keidel (9-5) walked away with all the marbles.

Keidel, who has delved in more aspects of harness racing than most, wasted no time in sending his charge to the lead from the two-hole despite a challenge from Steve “You're Never Too” Oldford with the slight (7-5) betting favorite, Santini.

As the field marched to the quarter pole Keidel stepped on the gas and opened a position behind him
for Oldford to fall in along the pylons which Steve did before the quarter pole timer flashed :28.4.
Meanwhile, Michelle “The Belle”Ruvola and Better Call Saul, who started from post seven, got caught on the limb and they remained parked-out the entire mile.

As the field passed the half in :58.4 Nashville Holiday was cutting the fractions and Santini tight on Keidel's back in the two hole. The order remained the same among the top two as Bob “Lumberman” Troyer moved Sneaky Sam into third place as they trotted by the three quarters in 1:29.4.
Down the lane Keidel put the pedal to the metal and Nashville Holiday opened up a 2-1/2 length lead which he held over Santini all the way to the wire. Despite being parked all the way Better Call Saul chugged home for a third place finish.

After five second place finishes and four thirds in 16 trips to post this season the seventeenth was a charm for Nashville Holiday who paid $5.80 for win. The 5-year-old altered son of SJ's Caviar is owned by Jeffrey and Toni Arvin and trained by Jeff Brewer. For Gregg Keidel, who has driven sparingly over the past decade, this marked his l04th winning drive.

No Recess Scores Convincing RUS MidAtlantic Victory at Meadowlands

(East Rutherford, NJ) – A field of eight trotters converged on Meadowlands Racing & Entertainment Saturday (October 20, 2018) night to compete in the second leg of the RUS MidAtlantic series.  When the dust settled, No Recess, ridden by Sietske Dijhkof scored a convincing ten length victory, stopping the teletimer at 1:59 over the fast track.   Hyway Marcus finished second while French trotter Atout De Fontaine, making his first start in North America and first overall since April at Angers in France, finished third a half-length further back.

MidAtlantic Trot.  Photo courtesy of Clarissa Coughlin.
When the gate opened, Hyway Marcus went right for the lead with Atout De Fontaine pushing the perennial circuit winner to the first quarter, parked in a :28.3 split.  Keenan, taking advantage of the rail position managed to get away third with Funny Photo parked fourth.  No Recess, the eventual race winner got away sixth.

Through the rest of the race to the three-quarter marker, the race was close as Hyway Marcus took the field through fractions of :57.3 and 1:28.3.  By the time the field reach the three-quarters, a stalking No Recess, made up enough ground to be second.  Funny Photo, who was parked the entire way was third.

Once the field hit the stretch, No Recess hit his best stride opening a two-length lead over Hyway Marcus, who used early was unable to engage the leader.  Continuing his drive, Recess was the victor by open lengths.  Atough De Fontaine, fourth at the top of the stretch managed to finish third just behind Marcus as the tough trip took its toll on Funny Photo who managed to hold on to fourth, two lengths further behind.  Puddin N Pie, making his first start under saddle picked up the final purse check in fifth.  Finishing further behind (in order) were Keenan, One True Friend, and Credit Blues.

The winner is a nine year-old altered son of Rich Boy – Riann Photo by SJ’s Photo and is trained by Kyle Spagnola for Spagnola Racing, LLC.  With Saturday’s victory, Sietske Dijhkof now has a riding record of 4-3-0-1 for 2018.

The final leg of the RUS MidAtlantic series will be contested at Rosecroft on Sunday, November 4.

MILITARY MASTER A, GRUDEN WINS SATURDAY NIGHT 44G CO-FEATURES

BY FRANK DRUCKER, Publicity Director, Empire City @ Yonkers Raceway

YONKERS, NY, Saturday, October 20, 2018—There was good form for both Military Master A and Gruden, and it continued Saturday night (Oct. 20th), winning Yonkers Raceway’s pair of $44,000 Open Handicaps.
Military Master A (Jordan Stratton, $5.80), from post position No. 6, prevailed from third-over in the week’s featured pace that cried out for a closer.
Pole-assigned Chantepleure (Austin Siegelman) inexplicably stuffed 7-5 choice Dr. J Hanover (Mark MacDonald) in behind at the outset, paying a :26.2 opening quarter-mile price for the privilege. The leader rated a :29.1 next substation (:55.3 half), but that would be of small consequence when the wolves came calling.
Gokudo Hanover (Jason Bartlett) moved from third, taking over past a 1:23.2 three-quarters as Chantepleure stopped and Dr. J Hanover was trapped.
Gokudo Hanover owned a short lead in and out of the final turn, but he, too, was inhaled. A second-up I’m Some Graduate (George Brennan) went by, but he couldn’t match strides with Military Master A. The latter, sixth entering the lane, won by a length in 1:52.1.
I’m Some Graduate was second, with Theartofconfusion A (Brent Holland) third. Scott Rocks (Eric Goodell) and an exhumed-too-late Dr. J Hanover rounded out the payees.
Chantepleure backpedaled to last in the seven-horse field.
For second choice Military Master A, a 7-year-old Down Under Bettor’s Delight gelding owned by William Hartt and trained by Lance Hudson, it was his seventh win (third consecutive) in 15 seasonal starts  The exacta paid $30, the triple returned $283 and the superfecta paid $1,065.
The week’s marquee trot saw Gruden (Bartlett, $4.50) leapfrog his half-dozen inner foes and easily go the distance (:28.1, :57.4,  1:26, 1:55.3). The lead was 2½ lengths off the final turn, the exact same margin at the wire
New Heaven (Brennan) slalomed the cones for second, with 9-10 favorite Lean Hanover (Stratton) a first-up third. Tober (Holland) and Kinetic King (Jim Marohn Jr.) settled for the minors.
For second choice Gruden, a 5-year-old Muscle Yankee gelding co-owned (as Allard Racing) by (trainer) Rene Allard, Bruce Soulsby and VIP Internet Stable, it was his fifth win in 15 ’18 tries (4 wins, 2 seconds, 2 thirds in last 10 efforts). The exacta paid $25.80, the triple returned $72 and the superfecta paid $409.
