RUTHERFORD, NJ – July 13, 2013 – Western Vintage, the 1-5 favorite, drew off to
a four-length victory in the $150,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes Final for pacing
colts and geldings, one of a quartet of championship finals for two-year-olds
on Saturday night, July 13, 2013 at the Meadowlands.
Unbeaten
Western Vintage, a son of Western Ideal, covered the mile in 1:52.2 and now has
three wins in three starts for owner Perry Soderberg of Hightstown, NJ who paid
$7,000 at the Lexington Selected Sale and has now banked $97,250 with the
Brittany Farms-bred colt.
Trained
by Nancy Johansson and driven by Yannick Gingras, Western Vintage paid $2.20 to
win. In The Clear by Western Ideal cut the early fractions and held on
for second. It was five lengths back to Caviart Chase by Tell All in
third in the fourth race.
“He’s
one of the best [two-year-olds] we’ve seen so far,” said Gingras. “I
pulled first up, and he wanted to take off.”
Cee
Bee Yes rallied to win the $150,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes Final for
two-year-old trotting fillies, the second race, by a nose over Dancing For
Money [Muscles Yankee] in 1:56.3. It was a length and a half back to 4-5
favorite Pacific Winds K [Muscle Hill] in third.
The
daughter of Muscles Yankee – Enbeecee improved her record to two wins in two
starts. She paid $9.80 to win.
“The
trip worked out great, but she also showed up and trotted down the lane,” said
winning driver Andy Miller. “She’s got a bright future.”
The
Julie Miller trainee races in the name of Jason E. Allen of Vincentown, NJ and
Douglas W. Allen of Southampton, NJ. A $45,000 Harrisburg yearling sale
purchase, Cee Bee Yes has now earned $84,500.
Hill
I Am slugged it out with Southwind Spirit through the stretch but would not be
denied in the $150,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes Final for two-year-old trotting
colts, the third race.
Hill
I Am was a length winner over Southwind Spirit in 1:55.4, a stakes record,
eclipsing the mark of 1:56 set by Yankee Glide in 1996. The first two are
from the first crop of Muscle Hill.
Sumatra
[Muscles Yankee] was third by three and three-quarter lengths.
Owned
and bred by Roy Dobbins of Bryant, AL and trained by Dennis A. Laterza, Hill I
Am was driven to victory by Corey Callahan.
“[Southwind
Spirit] is no slouch, but I had a lot of confidence in this colt,” Callahan
said. “I’m very impressed with him.”
Hill
I Am completed a sweep of all three New Jersey Sire Stakes races in his division
and lifted his earnings to $95,750.
In
the sixth race, the last of the finals, 6-1 Bolt of Thunder, driven by John
Campbell, had the lead at every call and drew off to a length and a half
victory the $150,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes Final for two-year-old pacing
fillies.
The
daughter of Rocknroll Hanover, second in both New Jersey Sire Stakes
preliminary legs, paced the mile in 1:53.1. Owned and bred by Robert L.
Hamather of Exeter, Ontario, she is trained by Larry Remmen.
“I
knew I was sailing along with fractions which I thought were okay,” said
Campbell. “She held on and showed some guts at the wire.”
Fiyonce
was second best and Cut A Deal was third, two and a half lengths back.
Both are also by Rocknroll Hanover.
